If you have that luxury you should only lock your diff's when need be to keep you from getting stuck. Being locked all the time can cause damage to your rig or get you real stuck. I.e. IF you are running a sidehill that is slick and you are locked you will slid down the hill sideways. I have a friend that runs detroits front and rear and I have seen him in some situations because of the fact he is locked all the time.

Rob said it best.<I don't tend to run trails with the lockers on all the time, but I also don't wait until I am stuck to flip the switches.>

I think this poll is misleading you.

Auto-locker, simple, cheap, reliable and fun. Its a lot of fun on short highway ramps too!

I am a conservationalist by trade, so I practice low/no impact wheeling.
Another conservationist by trade, excellent! I tend to follow the keep it unlocked unless necessary perspective as well. Plus, when turning on relatively flat ground, a locked rear diff will tear up a lot more vegetation than an open diff. And remember this:

Vegetation is the skin of the earth. When you cut the skin, the earth bleeds.

I'll just reiterate what some have already said. I just evaluate the obstacle, and will often lock up 10-15 ft before it to give plenty of time for the e-locker to engage. What really helps is when you wheel with other 4runners and Tacomas, and see what kind of difficulty the person in front of you has when taking particular lines.

I dont have a choice with my rear spool...100% locked 100% of the time. Like Crawler mentioned, I too have the option of 2LO...comes in handy quite often, especially on those tight trails where a tighter turning radius is required along with traction.
