Lifting a high mileage 4Runner?

I have had some people tell me that lifting (I'd like to do a 3inch) on a high mileage- 177k miles- truck will uncover lots of problems/vibrations from my existing suspension bushings and mounts... Any thoughts on this?

177k miles? your just breaking that bad boy in! its bs. when you get a lift they replace your suspension with the lift's suspension components. they must be thinking of FORD or DODGE.

Maybe if it's a FORD But you have a TOYOTA that kind of mileage is just warm up mileage. I did a 4" suspension with 190,000 and at 223,xxx only thing that shakes are the domestic trucks as I roll by.

Yes, but it is also the chance to fix them, so I would say it all evens out and go for it!

Ilifted my rig the first time with less than 100,000 miles on it. Then again after 250,000. I am still running the original 22-RE bottom end has never been touched.

I did my OME lift at 240k... Now with the new engine, I figure it's pretty much a brand new truck. Unless you live in the rust belt, Toyotas will last as long as you let them...

If you do it right, you'll be replacing all the bushings anyway, and unless your truck has been wrecked, the mounts should be just fine.

Ok, I think I know they they are talking about and it has nothing to do with brands gentlemen. There are components that might fail more quickly on a high mileage truck if you lift and wheel it. But, when you replace them the truck is good to go.

My 89 was stolen for the final time with 297,000 miles on it. It was a 3.0 5 speed, great truck.

I put a bracket lift on it because a) I didn't know any better and b) there really wasn't much else out at that time (10 years ago). The mileage with in the low 200,000's when I lifted it. That gave me driveline vibes. New u-joints didn't work. Custom axle shims didn't work. A $500 high angle driveline helped but there were still there just a bit. Regearing fixed it. It turns out there was just a little too much play in the pinion bearing, who would have thought? Since gearing lower increased the driveshaft RPM, it's not typically if fixes driveline vibes but that's how it worked out.

My power steering took a total dump. First the pump failed on a rock trail. Then, the pressure side powersteering hose burst in a parking lot. Then the steering gear started to leak badly. This was all about 3 months after lifting. I fixed it all an had 7 years of trouble free service from the steering and would still be driving it if it weren't for the thieves.

I'm not trying to discourage you from lifting and enjoying your truck, I'm just making you aware of the maintenance items we will all eventually face. If we lift and wheel the trucks, we just face them sooner.

Frank
