Has anyone tried a K40 CB? Like this one, http://www.k40laser.com/k40cb/cb_radio.htm

 

It looks almost identical to the UNIDEN 510XL that I have have in my truck. Got it at best buy for $49. Works great.

 

In addition to squelch and volume, RF gain control is nice. The Uniden 520XL has this. It looks a lot like the one you posted, but has an additional small knob on the front. They go for about $20 on eBay. I got mine on eBay and it works great and will fit anywhere since it is so compact.

 

Thanks, I found a great cb shop at a local truck stop and ended up getting a Cobra 25 LTD Classic (peaked and tuned) and a K40, 5-foot whip ant that I'm going to permanently mount on the roof.

 

Excellent. Truckstops are the way to go. How are you going to mount the ant on the roof?

 

Drill a hole in the roof and run the coax under the head liner.

 

That's what I've done, works great, and you have no wires loose around the truck. Just make sure that you use enough silicone to keep any moisture out of the cab when you mount the antenna.

 

Do you have the k-40 with the wire whip? If so, did you use the weather donut gasket and still need silicone also?

 

Yes, yes, and yes. You can never have too much weather proofing, especially when it comes to the roof of your truck. A thin bead around the edge of the plastic base is all you need, just remember to wipe up the excess before it dries so you don't damage the paint on your truck.

 

I'm about ready to drill the hole in the roof and its getting scary now Where did you drill yours? I'm thinking about putting it about 2-3 inches behind the interior light fixture.

Also there seems to be some thickness to the roof, like about an inch or more. Is that space just a void or is there insulation or somthing sandwiched between two layers of sheet metal?

 

Pull out the interior light fixture to look inside the headliner, there might be a cross-member there. The light usually mounts into one. I mounted mine just forward of the rear hatch, but I'm thinking of moving it to a similar position as you sice I removed my cell-phone antenna and have a hole there too. The roof is about 1/4" think on ,y truck, might be different on yours due to the extra-cab you own and how the cab is assembled.

When drilling, just take it slow and easy and keep the hole-saw vertical or it can dance all around before it bites into the metal. If you have a hole punch or a nail-set, use that to make a dimple where you are going to drill so you minimize the "dance" effect.

Yep, I opened up a new tube just for this. I also made a rubber gasket to help protect the paint.
