Hello to all of you out there. I have a 1989 Toyota Sr-5 Pickup Extended cab. 2wd but has locking hubs for 4 wheel drive. I was planning on putting a 3 inch body lift with some 33's just to beef it up a little bit. But with the little 4-Banger 2.? litre engine, I didnt know if it would be too much stress on it. If not, Are there any ways to beef up a little 4- banger?? please let me know!!

Its not the engine that will take the beating. If you go with bigger tires and are way undergeard your clutch is what will suffer. I dont understand is your truck 2wd or 4wd? Not that it really matter with IFS though cause its all the same lift.

maybe he actually has a ford or something. lol. or maybe hes a ford person. ya never know with those ford people. not too bright. the truck will handle the lift fine. i run a 2.4L 22re 4 banger and im going to lift it 3inches all around and all iv done is replace te air filter with a k&n and im putting a new exhaust on it. but it wont rly matter. the trucks fine. dont go totally crazy, but the gearing is strong stock.

good luck 2wd. yesterday i saw a 2wd tacoma running somewhere in the ballpark of 33x15.5" bfgs. I also know another dude who runs 31x13.5 sx's (or maybe wider than 13.5). i dont know why they do it though. i'm guessing for pavement superiority. but if the rear is locked up it will go far anyway.
on a similar note, a lexus followed me up some pretty hard parts of a trail yesterday and i am impressed. it's actually not a bad rig! too many gadgets and fanciness for my liking though
edit: by the way it can handle a lift. but if its 2wd id rather put the money to a long travel suspension and lock the rear and go flying. i dont like the idea of lifting ifs. SAS, long travel, or stock!!

Yessir, tis true this. However, if I remove from my truck(4x4), the locking hubs, front axle assembly, front driveshaft and transfer-case(I still think it would qualify with), then I have a pre-runner. EVERYTHING ELSE the same. Gotta know what one REALLY is, I geuss. Sorry for not explainin' thoroughly, I just expect people to search on thier own.

you can take probably up to 33" tires without regearing. it wont be the peppiest thing, but you can do it. i wouldnt recommend going above 33" with stock gearing

33's are going to be pretty darn slow on any vehicle of this type which is geared for much smaller tires. I would seriously consider regearing because not only will the clutch wear but mpg will be poor and yes, the engine will wear out more quickly. It is afterall being asked to produce full power much more often with those large tires.

Son of a.........No dude, not 4x4, PRE-RUNNER. Yes difference, NAMELY, pardon the pun, PRE-RUNNER. There's NO way two have a 2 wheel drive with a locking hub installed otherwise. You can take a 4x4 and make it a PRE-RUNNER, or you can take a pre-runner and make it A 4X4. The ONLY difference is front wheel drive. Get it yet? Aye, aye, aye. Yes, I do know about the newer PRE-RUNNERS that are 4x4 from the factory.

It is gearing that is key. Locking hubs do no good on a 2WD...there is nothing to lock.
