What are people running for hydro assist? I seen trailgears kit and wondering what else is out there. Please let me know what you guys are running.

 

All the hydro assist kits are pretty much the same components with some slight differences.

 

PSC pump and reservoir, Rock Logic Ram, stock IFS box, home brew clamp until I get a chance to work on the rig again.

 

Hey wabbit, with the above kit(s), do I need to step up to a larger resevior? Is the stock pump OK? And I'll probably port my own steering box, can you point me in the right direction for this? Thanks

 

A bigger reservoir is usually better.

I have seen 3 people with the 22RE either eat up pumps or get more consistent performance with an aftermarket pump, always PSC. No more whine, belt slip or heat issues.

 

You can just make a larger reservoir by adding some 3" exhaust tubing to the existing reservoir and a larger ps cooler is good as well. As far as the rest of it, you can pretty much get it in the kit.

 

So, actually get a cooler, as opposed to the lines in front of the radiator that's stock and a larger resevior. Almost sounds to easy! You'll be getting my money when I order. I'll gladly pay for the tech you provided. No one ever has tech that worth a damn anymore, and if you call, you get some chick(or dude) that only knows how to take credit card #'s and addresses. I used to work at K-Bar-S, a Bronco store in Las Vegas, and I gave tech help to anyone who needed it. Now-a-days, when I call someone with a tech question, they tell me to buy their junk to solve my problem, without ever listening to my question. Thanks for the help and look forward to my order!

Anybody else have pics of their RA setup? What resevior, pump, cooler extras are you running? C'mon let's see 'em!

added Howe's large cooler after having the fluid boil over on one trip (using larger reservoir and heat exchanger fins on filter):



With that cooler, there is hardly any warmup of the fluid, steering is rock solid all day long.

 

i run the r.a. from t.g. in my runner its a 4cyl so it has the side res instead of the v6 with it built into the pump have had no isuues with it very positive steering now, i use it on my d.d with 37 beadlock wheels, you can add a cooler in front of the rad, it wouldnt hurt but you should be fine to run this kit without it..it has been in there for about 2months or so now...

I got my RA installed, but am having problems with fluid aerating, only once I bring the RPM's up. I got a resevoir from Speedway with no baffles, and I think this is the problem. The inlet shoots the fluid into the wall of the res and it goes all over. The stock res has baffles and a screen inside it. What the #@&%!!!

 

My PSC comes in the bottom and out the side to the pump.

Have you blead the system?

On the UA FJ, we took almost an huor and had to pull the ram from the axle to get the ports to burp.

 

Yea, I've bled it several times. I also tried puting dry sump foam meant for oil systems in the resevoir with no luck. The fluid only airates when I bring the revs up or drive the truck. If the truck idles, it's fine. I did drill out the restrictor in the yota P/S pump, could this be a problem? I have another I could trade out.

 

I'll be going with the Redneck Ram from West Texas Off-Road next summer.

 

Alot of good that does me! Anybody got any ideas? When I bleed the system, I get it to where the fluid level goes down, engine off, tires in the air. I crank the engine with coil disconnected and the level does not move, so I don't think there's air in it. If I let the engine idle, the fluid is fine, no bubbles. But when I bring up the revs, the pump groans and starts to airate the fluid.

 

Do you have a power steering cooler?

Are you using the stock reservoir or the one you said?

Have you modified the pump?
