Going to 37"...?

I have a 3.4 in my 4Runner and this next year I will be doing a SAS on it and going to 37". Is there a noticable lose of power and gas milage going from 285's to 37"?

It's all about gears...stay stock and you'll be slower molasses...regear right and it'll be no big deal.

I have a "fresh" 22RE w/ 4.88s and 37/12.50/15 MT/Rs and mine will still accelerate in 5th on a flat, or even slight upgrade, and no problems w/ the other 4 gears whatsoever.

I would think that if you throw in some 5.29's it might be a little slower, but not to bad. Several people on here have done that and they are happy.

I have 4.88s and 37s with an auto 3.0. its not fast but it does fine. i'd say with the 3.4 and 5.29s you should be just fine.

I also agree that 529 will make you happy. Now, just so you know, 37" tires puts you in the range of 571 gears also......you have that excellent OD of .71 I believe so you have "options". The difference between 529 and 571 is only 8% anyways.
That said, you will be very pleased with the 529 option with your combination. ZUK

I agree w/ Zuk on the gear selection... W/ one small commnent. The 3.4 typically isn't geared as low from the factory than the 3.0. For example, the 31" tire package w/ the 3.0 came w/ 4.88's. The 3.4 came with either 4.10 (4runner) or 3.9 (d-cab) for the 31" tires. That math (w/o a calculator) would get you into the 4.88 range for a 37" tire. But to make up for the extra weight, I'd definitely go 5.29s - I've believed the 3.4 to be slightly under geared anyway.

The truck is a manual. I was talking to Eric and Jay at Yota Masters(they work on my truck when I mess it up lol) about this and they more or less have said the samething.

I've seen a lot of these type comparisons on here, saying 4.88 with the auto is "better" than 4.56 with the manual...But you can't compare just the diff gearing without considering the ratios in the tranny can you? With the manual, I think there are MUCH lower gears in the tranny than the auto.

If anybody can, I can....just look at my sig...... I run 'em. But now I see he has the 5 speed so none of it applies.

Maybe that question didn't come across right, Zuk. Is the gearing in the manual transmission significantly lower than the auto? Does 4.56 in the manual tranny and 4.88 in the auto have the same overall gear ratio?

I don't think there's an answer for that. The nature of an auto is so different.....
