I have an 86 4runner with stock gears (im assuming) and have 31 inch tires. I was reading somewhere that 31 inch tires and stock gears can be bad for the clutch. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? thanks -aaron

 

I ran 4.88's with my 31's for 2 months and now I have 33's. I liked the way it drove with the 31's, no good for freeway driving, but rocked in the mountains.

I don't think 31's and stock gears will hurt anything. If you went to 33's or bigger you may have issues.

 

im running stock gears and 31's, it will wear the clutch a little more in stop and go traffic off road because more slippage is necessary to get the vehicle moving as well as. the amount is totally negligible IMO. i will be regearing for anything larger though.

 

I run 4.56 gears with 31's, which is pretty close to stock gearing. I think the stock tire size for your truck was 225/75R15. 31's would be three sizes up from that.

 

31s were an option from the factory....

 

Were there ever 4.56's before the 92-92 Runners? I thought the early Toy trucks had 3.9's and 4.10's.

Are you slipping your clutch to take off? Does it stink a lot? Do you ever smoke it when wheeling?

It is not "good" for the clutch to be "incorrectly" geared, but being that close is not bad.

I think that 5.29's should be stock in any runner with an auto and 4.88's for anything with a stick.

 

Rigs with the 31" tire package and manual got 4.56, autos got 4.88. I ran 33s with 4.10s for a couple years, no problems with the clutch on the street but it will wear faster and if you're not careful you can overheat it.

I thought that 4.88's were only an auto with 31's package which was only 94 and 95?

 

Yeah, I thought 4.88s were only available on the newer ones too, but I've never looked into it so I could be wrong. BTW, my 93 has 4.88s according to the sticker in the door jamb.

 

Maybe if they came stock with 33's...otherwise that seems real excessive.

My (wife's) '94 came stock w/ 4.88s & 31's.

there was no 31" tire package untill the V6 models

the 4cyl's have 4.10's if its a stick and4.30's if its an auto

 

I like my runner with 35's and 5.29. with 5 spd.

When you guys talk about tires matching gear ratio, you need to add the trans to the equation. Auto trans always gear lower than stick with our toys. ex. 5.29 would be for auto with 33's and 35's with 5spd.

 

Not sure, but you may be correct there. The V6 came out in '88.

I have an 85' Runner 5spd. I have almost bald 31 MTR's, I wanna run 33's soon, possibly 35s in the future, would you recomend 4.88s or 5.29s, I personally don't like the idea of 5.29s they are a little too low and brittle compared to the 4.88s, Anyone have some input on that.

 

I'd go for the 4.88s...they should be Ok with the 33's. 35's might be a stretch...but having 5.29's with 33's for even a small amount of time would suck, IMHO.

My '91 had factory 4.56 with the big tire package. It might have started with the '90's (second generation) V6's

 

i would go 35's right now. you will save money in the long run by only regearing once to 5.29's and you will probably be happier to boot.

 

I've been trying to figure out what gears I have in my 4runner. I have a 3.0 w/ an automatic, door jam sticker says it came w/ 225/75/15's as stock tires when I bought it it had 31's on it. Code on the door jam says -G144/A34OH- any help would be good. even went to the
dealer and they said they don't know maybe 4.56's.
