Gear opinions needed
Sorry if i'm beating a dead horse but... I need some help.
Im re-gearing in december, and I currently run 33's on my 98' 5vz auto 4runner and im stuck between a rock and a hard place. I Don't plan on running 35's for a while and this is my DD. I originally had my mind set on 5.29 but looking at gear calculators and hearing some people say GO FOR IT and others say holy crap thats waaay too much, Im not sure now. my rpms at speed are perfect, its just maintaining speed on a windy day or accelerating in any situation that I encounter a problem. so opinions and explain.
also what do you southeast guys think of Hudlow axle, Ill be having them do the work.

is there any dead horse left to beat? haha
i guess it depends on how soon you will go with a bigger tire and whats your final goal, if its sooner than later and you want a hardcore wheeler id go with 5.29 but if it going to be awhile id say 4.88s

Make sure that you are using the correct overdrive ratio when you are calculating your RPMs. The A340 auto has a .70 overdrive.
So, compared to a manual which is either .85 or .83, its a huge difference.
I have run 5.29s on 33s with a 2000 4runner A/T. Its a hair over geared, but only a hair. IMHO, 4.88s will do just fine as well, but if you see yourself going to 35s, then do the 5.29s.
Auto
75mph, 5.29s, 33s: 2828rpms
75mph, 4.88s, 33s: 2609rpms
Keep in mind that a manual transmission will run much higher RPMs, but yet get better gas mileage as well.
5spd
75mph, 5.29s, 33s: 3434rpms
75mph, 4.88s, 33s: 3168rpms
So, for all the guys NOT running an auto, its not even close to the same gearing that is needed.
