Fully Locked 3rd Gen - capabilities?

With a rear locker and arb locked front IFS...how capable is a 3rd gen runner with a 3 inch suspension lift.

Should be able to handle alot of obstacles I would think? I about to order arb stuff for the front of my truck, already have a rear locker...

thanks, Tim

It will go anywhere you want to take a full-bodied truck that you care (even remotely) about body/glass damage.

Oh, and the front locker PREVENTS as much CV damage as it causes.

If you locked your front IFS, is it the same locker to lock a SAS?

Can you do upgrades in stages or do you have to SAS first to prevent buying a new locker?

no. front ifs diffs are 7.5 inch, sas w/toy axle is 8inch, sas with other axle is whatever other axle is.

7.5 inch diffs sell very quickly when equipped with ARB. essentially, you can sell it to cover the cost of the new one.

bingo. 3" of lift on an IFS is MUCH more of a CV-killer than a front locker on 2" of lift with a 1" diff drop and the correct length shocks.

as far as "where can you go with a front locker", maybe you should take a look at the old pics on http://sonoransteel.com and see where steve used to take his double-locked runner before the surgery.

I'm still trying to figure that question out.

It's as capable as you have the Kahonies to take it.

Also, not only can you take obstacles slower, but with an open diff, the tire in the air spins TWICE as fast as the others (the speed of the ring gear is the average of the two wheel speeds), so when it comes down into contact with the ground, there is a tremendous amount of shock on the system. With a locker, the wheel is going the same speed (basically 1/2 as fast as with an open diff) greatly limiting the shock when wheels come off the ground and back down.

Here's an idea...

Put your locker in and join us for the SE4RJ in Tellico this June. I know of 2 double locked IFS 3rd Gens going (including myself). There will probably be more there as well.

You can see for yourself how capable it is...if you have the balls to follow us.

I know...its a long ways (1000 miles) from Boston. Its 1500 miles from Albuquerque & even farther for some others.
