Diesel 4Runners
This ones for all you diesel guys,
I've been thinking about an engine swap for my '90 4Runner, the 22R is getting awfully long in the tooth. I've been thinking of going diesel and my questions are long and varied. Would you recommend it? Have you got any gripes about the engines in yours, how easily do they start in the cold? What would be my options for turbo's or superchargers and what sort of horsepower/torque am I looking at? Etc Etc Etc.
Any input would be great
Thanks,

Hello,
Basically you've two options, the 2L-T or 2L-TE 4Runner, this is a 2.4TD and the 1KZ-T or 1KZ-TE, this is a 3.0TD.
My 4Runner is a 3.0TD (1KZ-T) and I love it. I've +186k miles and it still runs fast and powerful.
In Japan the diesels were electronic injection and in Europe (Not the UK) weren't.
In the mechanical injection ones like mine, you can add an intercooler, add a few washers in the turbo wastegate to add a little more boost and tune-up the injection pump.
In the electrical injection models you can add a chip, intercooler and so, but I prefer the non-electric ones, they're more reliable (No MAF) and no-electronics use to be better when travelling in the Sahara for example.
I think it's more difficult (read expensive) to get a 3.0TD in the States, but if you can you won't regret.

I think I'll try for the 1KZ-T, not TE
Water and electronics don't get along, and I've had my run in with water (see post in "Snorkles, Use 'em ..." thread). How about tranny/transfercase combo's??
I notice you both have lockers, Looking at a set of e-locks myself. Definately electric. Air & -30 C. get along as well as ice/snow & a locked rear diff.

Ive got the 2.4l turbo diesel. The only thing I dont like about it is the vibration at idle and the placement of the a/c condensor is horrible! They put it right behind the front skidplate! So mud just packs into it!
I take it they did this because the diesel runs much hotter.

My A/C condenser is in front of the rad, I think equal than in the V6, but different condensers.
I replaced mine this weekend because it was bored:

A pic of the engine before fitting the condenser:

A nice feature of the diesels is the stock dual battery setup hehehe
