CO2/OBA question
#21
I love the brains on this board!
I'm surprised you didn't mention that earlier...
Haven't heard from Power Tank yet but I'll let you know what they say.
BTW, we didn't really need to know what you were doing when thought of this, Tom.

When in grad school, I used to run ESR (Electron Spin Resonance) to study metal centers in enzymes. We used ultra-high vacuum and liquid helium to cool the instrument down to 4 Kelvin (-269 deg. C)- now thats damn cold!

Steve (from Power Tank) Sasaki's reply:
HI Tom-
If you push CO2 vapor through a particular restriction (port or screen) you
can form dry ice. This is what causes freeze clogging. If you push CO2
liquid through a valve into atmospheric pressure you also get dry ice.
There were many empty fire extinguishers at army bases because the soldiers
would use them to cool their beers down by blanketing them with dry ice.
In order to alleviate freeze clogging in a CO2 regulator at high flow rates
and relatively high pressures requires a special orifice design and
sufficient heat transfer into the regulator body. You also need to make
sure the materials that you use in the internals of the CO2 regulator do
not distort or disintegrate under prolonged exposure to sub-zero
temperatures. These factors make CO2 the most difficult gas to regulator
in this type of application.
Pressures in all CO2 bottles with liquid CO2 are the same for all
industries. The CO2 determines the bottle pressure depending on the amount
of heat (ambient temperature) at the bottle and the vapor space in the
bottle.
