I have a 20# co2 bottle that for years I just bungeed down on the cargo area but really want to secure this thing properly - I'm a little confused on how to mount it in the cargo area of a 3rd gen 4Runner. Can I see some pics of your mounting systems - and description of what you used would be great. I'm looking at this heavy duty bracket but not sure how it mounts in the cargo area.

too bad that mounting bracket wasnt able to mount horizontally, that way you could mount it over the wheel well hump. Anywhere on the cargo floor is really a waste of real estate IMO. especially if its going to be a permanent fixture. or you could do the 1st gen roll bar mod and mount it up to that.

i was looking into getting a 2.5lb air tank setup, but would rather not have the tank in cab as they're bulky. id rather have it outside, tucked up under the truck. stowage space is important to me, esp for camping trips. the less permanent fixtures in the trunk..the better.

 

John, I have that same bracket.
It was in the '91, and now in the FJ Cruiser.

Do you have a cargobox in the rear?
If so, I bolted mine down to it.



If no cargobox, I would imagine you could drill holes in the floor after checking what is underneath.

Another idea...
Is the back of the 3rd gen similar to the 2nd gen?
If so, I will give you my Powertank rollbar I had made up for the 4Runner.



There is a scratch in the powdercoating on the plate where I had to hacksaw off a bolt that was stuck when I took it out of the 4Runner.

The C02 bottle bracket you posted bolts right to this, as the fabber guy put on a tang so it would bolt to it.

I guess I'm wondering what people secure to when they drill through the floor or the side panels. - like you fire extinguiser holder - what is it attached to behind the plastic panel?

Im using the same thing (in your link) but bought it from Matt for $50 and we meet close to home, (saving shipping) Mines mounted like Corey did in the 4runner, without the arm thing, just on the other side. its very secure. sorry no pics, if ya want one a i can go out and snap a pic.

 

I guess my confusion is what is it mounted to in the truck? what's behind the side panels that is strong enough to mount to? And sure - if you get a moment - snap a pic for me.

personally, i wouldnt hard mount it to anything. i would strap it down when i go out, but im not sure id like to drive around with it all the time.

but thats just me.

as for hard mounting it... how about mounting the bracket to the seat back? i know it would lean at an angle, but im pretty sure itd keep it secure and out of the way.

 

the floor on mine.

it comes 5 holes in the baseplate, so you can mount it to the floor,
look at the pic Corey posted, you can see the mounting holes.
Also has 4 mounting holes on the back, if you wanted to mount it laying down.
Heres mine:


Here you can see the 5 mounting points, I then used silicon around the nuts and bolts.

 

cant do that, good idea, but the back of the seats are made out of that compressed cardboard, and will not hold the weight of a 20# tank.

Yeah John, you can use the mounting holes on the bottom of the mount to drill holes through the floor like Ric did.
That is how mine is not mounted to the cargobox.

you can fasten it to the metal structure of the seat backs. thats how i installed my amps back there. just a thought.

 

for that matter - could I just fasten it up in the roof basket? Would that be dangerous?

geuss you could, i see 2 problems with that,
1) it would get hot, with the sun hitting it, and will probley blow the seal, but they are less than a dollar.
2) you will have to pull it down everytime you need air.

with it mounted upright, all you have to do is plug the hose in turn it on, and start airing up, yes Im a wimp, I dont want to be pulling that thing out everytime I need air, I have about 7ft. of hose, plenty to do all 4 tires without pulling out the CO2 tank, did I say Im also lazy, lol

 

I'm not too bothered pulling it down when I need air - which usually is at the end of a trail run which in my case is maybe every other weekend if I'm lucky. You on the otherhand, Ric, that is like every other day for you .John

 

Don't forget the $15-$20 to refill the tank after it blows.

John: I have the same bracket you linked in your 1st post. I have it secured with the 5 bolts through the floor also but it is on the right side of my cargo compartment. I also have it far enough away from the side so there is room to access the storage compartment right behind it. I can get a pic later if you want one.

 

true, but its $12 at Red Comet in Denver, they fill "your" bottle.

 

Must be nice. That's the cheapest price I've heard for a 10# bottle fill. I must be hitting the high dollar places.
