calling all yota diff guys
will the 4cly diff bolt into a v6 axel and use the same spline and such or would i have to replace the whole rear end i know the fronts are the same
the reason i ask is because i have a chance to buy detriot locked 4.88 thirds for my 91 chevota pickup but there from a 4cly and mine org had the 3.0 thanks guys

The front IFS diff is different i think. It won't take the 4cyl third I THINK....Check what you are getting into. I know The rear will fit, and unless you are running mondo horsepower, it will last forever. Why is hew getting rid of them??? Maybe something worng there. Check things like back lash, bearing preload etc.....might be to goog to be true.

IFS fronts from 1986-1995 were Identical. You only have to look for ADD vs non ADD. You can convert between the two, and they are direct bolt in, but you have to grab the vacuum hoses as well. Easier to just ADD if you have ADD, or non if you don't.

AxleIke beat me to the punch, but I'll let one fly anywho...
Think again, because that's incorrect. On both accounts, first, ALL IFS differentials(carrier, w/ring,side,and spider gears)are the SAME. Second there's no 3rd member.

Can't speak for mudhippy, but i was not responding to the OP, but to brooklee1000. Not sure why that makes me silly, but I'm willing to live with it.

Must be some miscommunication here. When I said Third member I meant the complete differential unit(carrier, ring and pinion plus spider gears) that you remove from the differential housing.

My original post was referring to the point that I thought that TRD_JW was getting front and rear diffs from a solid front axle truck. I apologize for any confusion. Whenever someone says 4cyl third or Diff, I usually assume that it means the old solid axles. Yes the 4cyl third fits into the rear axle of the newer v6 diffs, but I just wanted to ensure that if TRD_JW was getting a solid axle (4cyl) third, I did not think it would work in his IFS Setup. Just trying to be informative. AND if you have the thirds anyway, not a bad idea to check things like backlash and bearing preloads before install anyway. Suck to put things together and then have to replace because not checked before installation. There are more than a few guys here who will attest that even a proper install shop doesn't always do it properly, and somebody had to setup the gears in the thirds TRD_JW is buying.

Front 7.5 housings are the same like mentioned. The 4 cyl axle is a 2 pinion and the 6 cyl is a 4 pinion. You can even use 4 cyl gears in a 6 cyl axle as long as you buy a spacer. 4 pinion is stronger but if what you have on hand is 4 cyl stuff then run it.
