99 Reg Cab lift

Anyone,

1st time posting to this site and apologize if these questions have already been asked many times before.
I purchased a 1999 Tacoma Reg Cab, 5 speed, 2.7 with 88k miles for my 18 y.o. daughter now and wondering what is the largest tire we can put on it without adding the expense to re-gear it. Also what lift will be required to clear the tires. It currently has 235/75R/15 tires on stock aluminum 6 lug wheels and we understand we will have to go to 16" minimum wheel, but not sure what width to go for.
I was hoping a 3" lift would work as going higher seems to raise the price of the lift quite a bit.
What lift or leveling kit would you recommend? The prices seem vary anywhere from $200 to $1200 for a 3" lift. I am looking for best bang for the buck while maintaining decent ride and can still get the truck properly aligned so not to eat the tires or wear the suspension out.
The truck will not be a heavy off road truck. Just wanting it to look better. She normally likes the looks of a smaller wheel and more rubber than the other way around.
Im not sure the tires on the truck are the correct size as the speedometer indicated about 5 mph low at normal highway speed.

Thanks
