Has it ever been done before? The only thing that is different that I can see is the tranny crossmember and no extra hole in the floor for the shifter. The gearboxes are similar. Can it be done? Heck you have to cut crap off anyways so you probably can swap the 4wd crossmember to the 2wd. It looks like you would have less to cut on the 2wd than the 4wd.

if you're gonna do an SAS, why not buy one of those spiffy crossmembers from budbuilt, marlin or FROR?

it's essentially the same job except you'll need to put in a 4wd tranny and t-case, and figure out a crossmember for the t-case. also, you can run less lift since the front of the frames are arched much like a solid axle truck.

 

I was actually planning on doing this in about a year on my 95 4runner but with gas prices heading the way they are I think it will get sold before then

I've been wanting to do this on my 2wd for a while now. When I get some $$, I may give it a try. My current tranny has 192,xxx on it, so when it does go, I may just put in a 4x4 tranny. You can get one on ebay for like $300.

Anybody know how much of a difference there is in the wiring? I know I wouldn't have a light on the dash, but that's no big deal.

Hey, I didn't know that! Does that apply to 4Runners too? My front end has all the mounting points for a front housing and I even have the center caps that say ADD.

there is a difference between the 4runners and pickups!

the 2wd 4runners (and taco prerunners) are actually the exact same as the 4x4 ones but no front drivetrain and t-case, nitro hotpants did the swap, everything bolts in in a weekend.

2wd pickups on the other hand, are different. they have a completely different front suspension SUA in the rear, smaller axle in the rear, different bolt pattern, different steering box (often non-power), different x-members etc.

to SAS a 2wd pickup, you would basically need a bunch of 4x4 parts, both axles, transmission and t-case, steering, etc.

that said, when my 4runner is completely rusted out (its on its way) im going to buy a cheap 2wd taco, swap all the parts over from my 4runner and sell whats left. since i already have all the parts, its the logical choice. starting from scratch, however, not quite so.
