285 vs. 295--Is it worth it??

There are a few guys running 295 Nittos. I too am thinking about getting a set. However, the main reason I want them is to save the MT/Rs. With that said I have 285s now, and 4.30s.

I am not trying to beat another tire thread to death. I realize the obvious difference in sizes--height and width.

Does it even matter? Especially since I know 305s will fit with a little more pinch weld pounding.

If I was going to have two sets of tires, I would make my street tires smaller not larger. This would decrease rolling resistance, unsprung weight, and increase fuel efficiency. I would also consider a tire with less agressive tread and longer warranty.

I agree with Brad.... smaller size, and longer tread life for a street tire...

I want a good AT tire. I won't always swap tires, so I am not interested in anyhting smaller than a 285. PErhaps a 255/85, but brands are limited.
I like the MT/R, but with my son being born in less than 2 months, I won't be needing the MT/Rs for a few months.

285s would make it easy.

Stick with the 285's then and go with the Nitto's or Toyo Open Country's. They are good all terrain tires and very quiet on the road.

1. get some 305 MT/R's off of ebay for $800 shipped.

2. sell your 285 MT/R's for about $700 to get your money back out of them.

3. buy some 285 NTG's for your DD tires and save the 305's for wheeling for the next 10+ years.

i may be doing #3 here in the next few months...

#3 sounds good. Let's see what happens with all my rims sales. I might just do this. The 305 MT/R was what I wanted in the first place. I think I was the first person to find out about the discontinued 305

the 295 NTG are pretty sweet... I have no complaints with them so far...

Have you checked out the Mud Grapplers? Theres a huge F350 next to my house with some Mud Grapplers and the sidewall of those suckers are aggressive! They pop out like no other...

The only problem with the Mud GRapper, is price. They are almost $50 more than the MT/R. I just don't care that much to spend the extra $$$$. The local tire/ off-raod shop, Mincz Tire (place that SAS'd a green 3rd gen), the owners son has a ridiculous Excursion on 40x15.5x22 Nitte Muds. Granted they are not for real wheeling, but he swears the MT/Rs are quieter than the Nittos.
I know this is all word of mouth, but I am happy with the MT/R. However, for an AT I don't think the NTG can't be beat.

I have 295's on MT Classic Locks and 4.30's. They work just fine. In fact, I gained gas mileage when switching from BFG 285 MT's on Steel Wheels.

I get 15-18 in town and 18-20 on the highway. Not bad for the lift and all the extra weight I carry around.
