Question 1997 Taco rear lift options

Did a search, but little specific info on pre-98 Taco leafs. Mine are 'S'ing and are not long for this world. Besides, they are on the overload. Ewww.

So far it seems that Wheeler's 4- and 5-leaf house springs @ $329 are nearly it, maybe netting ~2" lift with shackles. Anyone wheel these? Off-road manners, road manners, load carrying, flex?

Surely there are other options short of ordering Alcans (which are fine springs indeed for about $450+), or retrofitting 98+ springs? Who has experiences with these various options? The 98+ springs seem worth it, being about 4" longer, but that's theory and you know what they say about theory.

Any other 'bolt-on' 2-2.5" lift options? Or shall I break out the plasma cutter and mig welder?

I saw All-Pro had some inexpensive 98+ leafs on their site- then they altered their site and they are nowhere to be found. Along with anything else Tacoma.

I got my Alcans from Randy at AOR for $430...they are setup for 6" lift and an extra 500lb carrying capacity. That's about it other than the two you already mentioned...

I'm pretty sure - while the 95.5-97 leaf springs are different from the 98- , you are still able to use the leaf springs designed for the newer tacos

I dunno... the newer ones are significantly longer (4"). The shackle angle, assuming you could even find one long enough, would be horrendous, and the axle would be back another 1 1/4" and the wheel would no longer be in the well.

Hey, nice blue Taco there, 4TACXOMA4. You like 4.88s with 35s, eh? Or would you go 5.29s if you had it to do over?

Mebbe I gotta go Alcan ($$$) or Wheeler (low lift), or do some welding (time and effort).

I think you are correct about using the later model leafs...they are substantially longer.

Thanks...For most of my driving the 4.88's are fine...my speedometer is dead on, and I am getting about 16mpg. Hills in 5th gear are still a little slow, and I also haven't towed much with them. If I were to do it again...for my uses, I think I would still go with the 4.88's. However, if I towed regularly or hauled heavy loads, I would probably go 5.29's.

Interesting. About a gearset step taller than previous generation trucks seems to be the rule then, gleaning from several folks. SSRs are true 35" too I believe. As far as springs, I got this reply from Brian Ellinger (Front Range Offroad Fabrication), which really opens options up:
Easy trick on your 97. Earlier springs, 90-95 are a bolt in. They will net a couple inchesd of lift. So grab some stockers from an earlier one, and get about 2" right there.

Hmmm. Tasty.

Yes, I forgot about the pickup springs giving ~2" of lift...
