Tundras and large, off-road tires.

Going through plans for my 2000 Tundra got me thinking about how strong the CV axles are on the 1st gen Tundras. I'm wanting to run 34"-36" tires. I'm not asking will they fit ( I know they will when the time comes.. Fender trimming, FTW) I'm more concerned about breaking the front diff or CV axles. I'm fairly certain they are rather stout, considering they are on a full size truck. But how well do they handle large tires?

Pretty darn sure that the 2000 tundra front diffs and cv's are the same as the 2000 tacomas. 7.5 inch front diff, same size cv's except longer shafts of coarse. So id go with the same guidelines wich can vary from driver to driver. Go with a 34 for best results. After all getting stuck is not a big deal, breaking down is. Good luck.

Thanks, man! This is still a whole different world of Toyotas to me. Never thought about them being the same size as Tacomas!

Okay, so I have been searching, but cant find an answer. I need a new front diff for my Tundra. According to this ( http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/diffs/ ) Tundras and Tacomas use the same front differential. Is it possible to use the entire front diff/clam shell from a 1st gen TACOMA in my 2000 TUNDRA? None of the junk yards have any 1st gen Tundras or Sequoias. I know I have seen a few Tacomas in them before, though...

Ya it wil fit. You won't be able to use the tacoma cv's though. But the diff will bolt right up.
Make sure to check the gearing, theres a good chance it could be a different ratio then your tundra. Guessing your tundra is an automatic. Might be 4.11 or lower. The tacomas had different ratio's for auto's and manuals, and tow packages, ect... Spin count method doesn't lie.

Forgot to mention 96 & up 4runner front ends same as tacoma. Might have better luck finding automatic 4runner front diff. Just make sure its an A.D.D. diff. And even if its not you could just switch out the actuator and stubs from your old diff into your new diff. Little bit of work but not hard.

Oh. I guess my edit didnt get saved.

I had mentioned that it is the 3.90 gears. Early 1st gen Tacos had a really high gearing. I want to say close to 3.90, may have been 3.54 or something weird like that. Can't remember, but I will look in to it.

My Tundra still has good looking CVs and the front diff is still in it. The pinion and flange got sheered off right at the diff when it was rolled, or so I was told.
Thanks again for your help!
