Tundra Gas Mileage
#21
Keeping stock tires helps alot. It's true that, with bigger tires, you will actually be going a little farther than your odometer reads, but it will be something like 2-3%, which is basically negligible. But big tires increase weight, rotational inertia, wind resistance, rolling friction, and so on. I swapped from the 30" to 31" on my T-100 and city mpg went from like 19 to 16 - definitely worth riding an inch closer to the ground.

My 2005 V8 with the increased horsepower pings sometimes with the horrible California gas, 87 octane. I average 10-12 MPG towing my double axle car trailer, and 13-17 MPG the rest of the time (17 MPG when gas hits 3 bucks a gallon and I take the lead out of my shoe). I've had it for 1 year, and have 61,000 miles, runs great on out of state gas!

FWIW, I switched out my Diffs, T-case, and engine oil all to AMSOIL Synthetics a couple weeks ago. 75W-90 for the diffs and transfer case, and 0W-30 Severe Duty oil for the engine (35K-mile life, that should be nice). I also installed a new fuel filter just for kicks, and the oil filter is one of AMSOIL's new Ea models (wanted to try it, sounds like they work well). So far I've seen a definite improvement in mileage (I drive about 70% city 30% hwy), though I won't have a semi accurate figure until I fill up again tonight and run that tank down from full. However the improvement will be measurable based on what I'm seeing so far. I added the fluids at around 7/8ths of a tank and got to about 60 more miles before the Orange Light of Death came on, including a couple spirited passes on the highway.
The fluids weren't real cheap, but they will save me gas and the drastically extended life of the engine oil will save me money over time for sure. The 75W-90 gear lube also has a life of 500K miles, so it'll probably last longer than the truck.

My 2004 AccessCab 4WD V8 . . .
. . . with 42,000 miles just got 12.48 mpg after pulling my snowmobile trailer with only a spray shield on the front and one sled about 250 miles round trip, I was only doing about 55-60 on the way up because of the awful conditions and a lot of the miles were with 4WD on and it was windy as a mo-fo, but overall, that isn't bad mileage compared with other trucks as I didn't need to fill up and made the trip on a tank.
I still can't wait to see what the new Tundra looks like.

We just averaged on 8.86 mpg towing a Polaris Ranger XP for half of 1752 miles on highway 99% of the time. I can't beleive it. I'm going to take it in tomorrow to the dealer, because something has to be wrong.
