T100 shift position indicator

Hey all, I have a '96 T100, auto trans 4x4 w/ 230k miles. it seems what ever sends the "gear selected" info to the inst. pod has become disoriented. Park reads drive, but neutral, rev. and the rest are not as you'd expect. This would not be too much of a problem, but it also effects starting. Right now it only starts in neutral ,some times. I have a lot of the dash appart and nothing seems to jump out. Any thoughts? Can the "not start in gear" interlink be over ridden? thanks Rudy

problem solved

It was the neutral safety switch. Part was $200 at the local toyota dealer. Took me about 30 min to replace. I made the mistake of taking the old one apart. For the price I expected high tech microprocessors or the like. What we got was a 1940's pot metal and bakalite arm with a couple of copper contacts. Looked like about $10 worth. The arm was broken.
