New Tundra owner here

I just bought a 2003 Tundra SR5 Access Cab 4x4 from the original owners with 100k miles. It has always been in Florida, has zero rust, no dents scratches or blemishes, almost showroom condition. I bought it to move to Alaska with, I am planning on leaving Florida by the end of March and I will be hauling an enclosed trailer with my tools and two motorcycles so I wanted something with a V8. I fell in love with the Tundra after test driving a 2000 with over 200k miles. So far so good with this one, it will need tires before the adventure, and I am thinking of going with the Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ in 265 75 16.

That's a nice, clean looking truck. I like the wheels on it. No first hand experience with the Mickey T's but I have a few friends that run them and swear by them. Good luck!

Wow this must be the least active forum on all of Yotatech! Why are there not more Tundra owners here? Are they all at Tundra Solutions? Seems like they aren't old enough to get all beat up in the woods yet. Even the 250k mile Tundras are fetching a pretty high price I guess. I suppose most of the immediate things I want to do to her include window tint, cd player with backlit buttons, and gnarly tires. Only 33% of those mods are yotatech worthy!

First gen Tundras are awesome. I wish Toyota would have kept them a 7/8 p/u, not made them a full-size.

The trip from Florida to Alaska is fun. lol. in 2000 (I was 10), me, my mom, two of my sisters, our 120lb dog, and an overloaded Mercury Villager mini-van made that trip in 10 days.

I spend most of my time at Expedition Portal....less thrash, more get out and camp, hike, eat....

I use TS as a research tool, it has almost too much info on it....

How's the truck?

I've been reading your 140k thread, very very nice build, you might like the build up thread on my 84 in my signature. Mines only one page though.

I absolutely hands down love the Tundra. I went from an 84 chopped and doorless solid axle 4Runner with no torque or power options, to a what seems like brand new, power everything, endless power and torque pickup. I know I'd get better gas mileage if I rode my motorcycle to work, but I can't stop driving the truck! I haven't been able to do any off roading with it yet, my tires are basically bald anyway, but I might be throwing the KLX in the back and heading to Okeechobee this weekend for some off roading, gun shooting fun.

The only downside to the truck is it's made me broke, my Grandfather lent me the $10 grand to buy it, but the taxes and registration alone pretty much tapped out my bank account, insurance and fuel costs don't help either. Lots of plans for her but no cash to do it with. I have a decent enough job but a college degree and flight training loans are a beast to pay back. Middle of the month; I'm a wealthy man. End of the month; I'm a pauper. But life could sure be a lot worse!

4.7l fuel mileage?

I have run my first two tanks through and I've gotten 11.7 mpg on both tanks, all city driving and maybe a little aggressive with the skinny pedal. I think it is on the low side but wondering how low compared to others? Also should add that I bought it with an O2 related check engine light on, so I'm sure that's not helping me out much either.

I found mud!

I was thouroughly impressed with her mud running ability in some of the softer stuff considering it has nearly slick highway tires, I can't wait to get the Dunlop Rover Maxx in 265/75-16

I typically get 14-15 mpg if I'm doing all city driving. And I wouldn't say I'm exactly light on the gas pedal either.

Yeah, that's about what I get around town, too. DrT, Change the O2 sensor(s) and see if that helps...

Is there a way for me to test which ones need to be changed or do I need to just change them all?

plug a code reader into the dash hookup and it will give a number..something like POxxx with the xxx representing a number. Look this number up and it will tell you "front O2 sensor, bank 1" or something like that. With 4 O2 sensors and different ways they go bad finding the code is the cheapest, easiest route.

I think places like Autozone will read the codes for you....but I bought a reader from WalMart for 80some dollars...

I get about 18mpg with mine. As long as I keep my foot out of it.

I get about 14.5 mpg during city driving and a little over 17 mpg on the open road in my 2000 trd 4x4 access cab with the 4.7L.

Well I made it 2 and a half months driving a nice new vehicle with a quiet exhaust like a normal person, but the redneck in me couldn't be held down any longer, cut my muffler off yesterday and pieced in some straight pipe. Sounds great, still has the resonator so it's not wicked obnoxious or anything. Best part was it only cost me $30 and some quality time with my angle grinder.

Straight pipe? I thought my super 44 was pretty loud, you have to post a sound clip of that.

muffler mod

I did that to mine too. Sounds alot like a flowmaster. I think the huge cats tame the noise a bit. I saw somebody do this to the new Camaro and decided to try it. It's not that loud untill you stand on the skinny pedal. The price is right too.

I drove it a bit before I put the new piping in, it was loud inside the cabin with the exhaust exiting under the cab. With the new pipe on and the windows up it is still very quiet inside, honestly a little too quiet. Might have to drop the resonator out after all.

Absolutely, 100%, can we go soon please? Where is there to ride legally? I am a flight instructor and I fly all over florida, there are plenty of places suitable for wheeling but they all have fences and no trespassing signs. There are some big powerlines just west of 95 that have cool trails that run forever, but again, no trespassing.

I'm running on nearly slick street tires, I'm trying to decide which tires to order and install some Bilstein 5100s up front, but for now i can ride this:
