My wife bought me a '78 FJ she found in craigslist. Only 70k on the clock, it starts(with some gas pedal pumping on cold starts), stops, steers, and runs really well. I honestly couldn't be happier with it.

Well, I figured I'd degrease the engine and all the other goodies. Long story short, I decided I should pull the motor, and replace all the gaskets and seals, and inspect everything inside, as well as some "while you're in there" stuff like lapping the valves if they need it...that kinda stuff.

Question time:

1) I've never owned an FJ or worked on a 2F, is there anything specific I should look for?

2) What size bolts do I need to put the engine on a stand? I'm guessing they're M10 bolts with a 1.25 thread pitch, but how long?

3) Where can I get a crankshaft pulley tool for it, or what can I use to pull it off? It's got an odd looking nut on the front.

4) It came with a Webber 32/36 carb. I'm unfamiliar with this make and model. Anything I should know? Should I fool with changing the jets out on it? Does anyone have a good set of progressive instructions on tuning it? It definitely needs tuning.

I'm sure I'll have more questions to follow, but that's right off the top of my head. I'm going to do a partial resto on it. I'll post a write-up and pics when I'm done.

The frame is in great shape. It has some rust, but nothing a drill and steel brush won't take care of.

The hard top is a little more...complicated. the rear ends of the side panels are rusted through and will require some cutting and welding. That long piece is what's called the hard top support. It's like the top part of the door jam for the ambulance style doors.

It'll be some work, but all in all, it's pretty sweet.

EDIT: Also, that bucket seat in the back is pretty lame IMO. I ordered some original jump seats and they're on the way.

She's beautiful and pretty clean! Yes, that part of the hardtop that rests against the body is where water gets trapped; hastens rust.

The Crannut is a 28mm socket. You can remove the pulley/balancer with a standard puller from any auto store. there are 2 threaded holes 8mmx1.25 in the balancer to mount the puller to. The Weber 32/36 carburetor is undersized for your motor. The 2F requires a 38 DGAS Carb. You will never achieve correct performance from the 32/36. Get a good set of metric tools and a HAYNES manual. Forget the Chilton. Graet Truck. You are a lucky guy!
