Lubricate speedo/cable on '89 Landcruiser

The speedo on my '89 has always made a light "chirp" sound in cold weather that usually goes away after a few miles. But after a long trip the other day it is now very loud and does not go away at any speed. I assume the cable and speedo will need to be lubed.

I'm wondering if this can be done easily somehow from the transmission end or if I have to get into the dashboard? If the later, any tips on getting access? There's usually a straight forward way to do these things that only figure out after making a complete mess to start. Any help would be apprecaited.
