Question 89 Fj62 Auto ?'s

Hello to all. I am glad I finally found this forum. A bunch of cruiser nuts like me and my dad. Anyway. We have an 89 fj62. It has 158,000 miles on it and has begun to worry me a little. I live in S.florida and dont do much Offroading so I have not used the 4 wheel drive in a really long time. The other day when I engaged it it felt really rough. I don't think I ever changed the fluid in the transfer case. I will be doing this next weekend. The auto tranny is another thing. When the tranny is cold it will slip in reverse. Meaning you put it in Reverse and accelerate and it just spins. Also when you in drive it will shift from 1 to 2 and 3 will slip as well. Once the tranny heats up all works great shifts fine and all. A mechanic told me to drain the fluid. drive for a week then change again drive for a week and so on till the fluid looks clean. I have always heard to never change the fluid on high mileage auto trannys. I s this true?. That this is the kiss of death to a auto tranny. The Mechanic said it might have some check valve that is getting stuck cause of the dirty fluid. We changed the fluid a few years back. That is all. Can I change the fluid with out the tranny taking a dump on me? Do you think my tranny problem is due to old dirty tranny fluid? Also the ac is cold but the blower is not blowing hard like it used to. Do blowers slowly die? I await your answers thank fellas.
Sorry this post is so long but I am excited to finally speak to people who know what the hell they are talking about!!!

Hi, and welcome to the forum.
Slipping is not a good thing for an automatic. I would change the ATF and filter. Could also try Seafoam transmission additive (it is a cleaner....might free up a sticking valve). With that many miles it might just be worn out.
Deffinitely change the transfer case oil, and front and rear diff. My FJ40 has been setting for 2 years. I just pulled the front diff, and it had moisture in the oil (and rust on the gears!) Should engage the 4WD occasionaly to keep the gears lubed.
Yes, fans can loose speed before they die.

There is also another site (IH8MUD.com) that has a FJ60/62 Forum:

Also very informative and gets more LC traffic than we have here.

Hmm... sounds like your tranny may be going bad, but about 100,000 miles to early. I used to have a couple of 62s and one had the tranny go out with 288,000 miles on it and the other had 256,000 miles when I sold it and was still on the stock tranny. But do go ahead and change the fluid and clean the screen. And change the fluid in all of your diffs and transfer case. Its just a good thing to do because who knows how long ago (if ever) the fluids were changed. Where are you located in FL. I'm living in Parrish which is just south of Tampa. Maybe we could hook up and go wheelin'. Good luck with your landcruiser they are great rigs and I miss mine.

Hey.. Sorry I should have gotten back to you guys earlier but I was out of the country. I have had some trouble with the tranny screen gasket. First my local dealer said it was on back order and a month later when I went to get it today the damn gasket was broken in half in the original bag!!! Boy was I pissed. Any way they are reordering it and I should have it by wednesday. I will let you guys know how it goes. My truck has been up on stands for a month waiting for a freaking gasket! A 3 dollar part!

Yeah thats the way things go. I hope you get it going soon. I miss my old 62. Well Miami is a bit out of my way. But I do get over to that coast on ocassion becasue my girlfriend lived north of palm beach. Next time I'm over there for a long weekend I'll email you. Maybe we could meet out at Corbett. Have fun with your Crusier and wheel it like you stole it. Thats what I do.

Talking Finally!!!

I got all gaskets and replaced all fluid and even added a slick fifty treatment for the tranny. Jeeze like new!!!. Next weekend will be new gear lube for both diffs and transfer case. I will be taking the truck to the dealer to have the brake fluid flushed later as well. Now about the AC blower. The truck has been turned off for a while. Yesterday I turned on the AC and it nearly blew me into the back seat!!! Did the blower just need a rest? What do you guys think is bad? The thermostat for the blower or the blower motor its self?
Thanks for all your help. I will be posting pics of the cruiser later! Later!

Thats good to hear about your tranny. It sounds to me like you may have a corroding connection going to the blower motor. Go in and replace the fuse and pull the connector off of the motor and clean the contacts. It should work good from then on out.
