I've been posting this subject on UK forums but I'm not getting anywhere really.

I've got a 1993 Landcruiser 80 series, its the 4.2 TD motor (1HD-T) with an auto transmission. Its done about 120,000kms and other than this ticking noise its in really great condition.

The noise I'm suffering from is similar to a stone in the tyre or like tapping a coin on your windscreen. Its noticable just after the engine is warm at about 5mins and can be heard at tickover through to about 2000RPM. The sound is related to engine speed but isn't a regular tick or tap, you seem to get two or three ticks then a 1 or 2 second gap then a few more then maybe one on its own, its never regular.

It sounds to be coming from the exhaust manifold side of the engine right at the back and at about the top of the sump level.

I've replaced the big end bearings - no difference (They had no visible wear)
replaced front exhast pipe - no difference
checked torque converter bolts - all tight
checked all around exhaust for leaks - no soot or leaks found
Valve clearances are a little tight and there is no noise from the top of the engine at all.

The noise doesn't change in drive, neutral, reverse, park. Engine load doesn't seem to make much difference.

Other than this noise the engine is like new, starts first turn, doesn't smoke, doesn't burn any oil, runs really smooth. Its been doing the noise for about 20,000kms but does seem to be getting louder now unless its just me listening to it more and worrying about the repair cost.

Any ideas anyone ?

There were no deisel 80 series ever offered in the US, so you probably won't get much help here. In fact there haven't been any (consumer) diesel Toyotas available here since the mid to late 1980s. Might try the Diesel forums at www.ih8mud.com .
