Marlin Crawler's new 1985-1988 W56 Short Throw Kits! (4WD applications)

Check out Marlin Crawler's new 1985-1988 W56 Short Throw Kits! (4WD applications)

Now taking Pre-Orders!! Kit pictures, installation guide, and more info coming soon!
Kit will include our USA-made billet aluminum base, pre-installed custom-made high quality stainless steel serviceable pivot bolts, modified & reconditioned Toyota shift handle, new Toyota shift boot, four captured-washer shift handle retainer plate bolts, and of course our Heavy Duty Red Shift Seat and Socket!
Tech info on this new kit:
- Eliminates the hard to find and leak-prone thick factory rubber gasket and it's six bolt spacers
- The thickness of the rubber has been calculated into the height of the base
- Leak-free One-piece Design
- Replaces 8 factory parts with our one base
- Serviceable Stainless Steel Pivot Bolts
- If the pivots in a stock base go bad, the entire base must be thrown away. Our design provides pivots that may be serviced at any time.
- Shift Handle Retainer Plate traps pivot bolts in place preventing critical failure
- If our loctited pivot bolt ever becomes loose, it can only move millimeters until it interferes with the handle's retainer plate. The very worst case scenario would just be a slightly loose shift handle rather than the shift handle flying out while you are trying to speed shift (something you'll be enjoying immensely).
- Transmission flange bolts remain in the stock location for ease of access
- The old way to reduce the throw was to slap a 1" spacer between the stock base and transmission flange. This required bolts that are 1" longer than stock. If you don't have a body lift, it can be a real pain in the ass trying to get these longer bolts in or out due to interference with the floorboard.
- Includes original modified Toyota Shift Handle (we'll need your old handle back)
- Includes the World's BEST USA-made Heavy Duty Seat and Socket
- The short throw magnifies just how great our H.D. Seat and Socket are. You've gotta check it out for yourself.
- Low Profile Design for floorboard clearance
- As mentioned, the old 1" spacer approach raised the entire shift base up 1" which causes interference in some cases and is particularly tricky to install with flat-belly (raised drivetrain setups)
- Made in USA from USA Billet Aluminum
- Way stronger than the stock cast part it replaces. Enough said.
For more info, see 1985 W56-A kits and 1986-1988 W56-B kits.
So, what do you guys think? It will maintain the same 40% shift handle pattern reduction as our other G52/G54/G58 and R150F/R151F kits, reducing both forward-to-back and side-to-side movements.
I'll keep this updated with any questions you might have and will also post additional pictures of the complete kit soon.
Happy Crawl'n from Marlin Crawler!
Regards,
BigMike

We are still working on our installer, but for the meantime, here come some install pictures from a customer
1. First remove your interior boot to expose your stock base.

2. Remove the stock handle & base and clean & degrease the surface to prepare for it's new silicone seal.

3. Install our new Short Throw base with our included Red Heavy Duty Shift Seat!

4. Install our new Short Throw Shift Handle with our Heavy Duty Shift Socket and new Toyota boot pre-installed and you're done!

The entire job should take a first-time installer approximately 20 minutes to complete.
Step 5. Get out and enjoy your new shifter!
Here is a comparison photo from this customer. you can see that before he had to remove the shift knob from his Crawl Box shifter due to it contacting his shift handle in 4th gear.
Now with our new Short Throw Kit installed, you can see how much extra clearance there is in the same 4th gear position, and he was able to finally re-install his Crawl Box shift knob:

Happy Gear Jam'n!

I wasn't sure if I had a W56 A or B since the PO did some swapping and I haven't found an identifier yet, so I called Marlin up. I was told there is very little difference, and that the short throw kits are identical for both.
Did I hear that right? If so, why different kits?

The main difference between the W56-A and W56-B is that the "A" uses an aluminum center section while the "B" uses a cast iron center section. Please consider the following two images:
W56-A:

W56-B:

The center section of the "A" is the same color as it's aluminum housings because it is also aluminum, whereas the "B" is made from cast iron. Side note: The picture we have of the "B" is from when we used to galvinize the cast iron center section, which is why it looks golden, however, today we paint them: either Black for a standard build or Red for a H.D. build. We stopped galvinizing center sections due to shift bushing issues in later model transmissions.
The only other differences I believe are that the reverse collar of the "B" is 2mm wider, and the center plate bolts are 1 grade higher than the bolts used on the "A".
I personally run a H.D. Marlin Crawler W56-A transmission in my 3RZ-powered 1981 because, well, it's lighter

We have plans to add 'Search by application' to our website so we need items to be separated for application-filtering purposes. For instance, our H.D. inner axle EcoSeal is the same for both Minitruck and FJ40-62 Land Cruisers, yet we list them on different pages.

BigMike
