the hunting rifle that Im getting has a magazine of 3 rounds, and most shotguns for hunting can only have 3 rounds and the home defense carry 9.

i bought a remington 870 last year from a local shop owned by a police officer. he originally built it up all fancy for himself and decided to sell the same day i came in looking for a shotgun for fun and for home defense. i've had lots of fun with it, not used for personal defense yet thankfully. i've shot target loads, slugs, and all sizes of buck and it's just freakin' awesome. i keep it loaded without one in the chamber and up and out of reach in the closet so if i do need it it's a quick grab and pump and i'm ready to go. i've got several other rifles but prefer the shotty because i don't want to shoot through the intruder and into a family member or into the neighbor's house. and even though it goes against every fiber of common sense, according to the law and those darn lawyers that will take everything from you and give to the defendant, you are supposed to get your family in a safe/secure spot or room, barracade yourself in there, identify yourself and tell the intruder to leave and call 911. that's freakin crazy but if it's family safety and lawsuit avoidance i guess that's how you do it. i've got 6 shots in the gun, 6 in the side saddle; so if i'm in a room with one entry and exit and i have to defend myself, i should be able to put the bad guy down in 12 shots in a door way until the coppers arrive. i'll leave the AK in the safe for now, but when the zombies invade that barrel will be red hot

I use a different kind of chuck for home defense.
I keep this hanging in my window, it scares them off.

I would like to get a shotgun one day.
Heck, I can not wait until spring/summer so I can get back to shooting again.
Up where I go to shoot my rifle it is under about 5' of snow right now.

here is my shotty

Some shotguns have a perfect place in home defense. I would take this over my pistol or my ak any day. And with eight shots I am not worried in the slightest about not having enough rounds for home invasion. For that matter if it doesn't work out then I always have some others just in case.

The shotgun is the ultimate close range, CQB, and home defense tool. Plain and simple, no arguement. Following that would be a good pistol with hollowpoints or something like that (SMGs aside).

Over penetration is a serious concern. Quite foolish to think that it's not. I assume you live by yourself, Cause I sure as hell don't want some high power rifle round piercing through my walls and hitting a family member. Come on now, think about it.

CJM, I'm just kinda lost trying to understand your logic.

Oh and by the way, you don't want a modified choke for shooting slug. You want a completely open choke w/ no contriction.

Me neither, Most hold up to 8 with ought the plug and instead of 1 bullet you have 150 small bullets. if you are in my house i WILL hit you every time with my shotgun almost guaranteed.
