3.4l 5vz interchangeability compatibility
Alright so i know that 96-98 3.4l 4runners have the same ecu and wiring for the most part (and then there were some changes from 99 to 02).
But a friend of mine asked if id be interested in his 04 tacoma with a blown motor. Which I am!
Ive been sitting on a 2000 motor with 160k miles but id like to know what differences i may encounter between the 04 tacoma wiring and the 00 4runner.
Any info would be appreciated.
If anyone would also like to elaborate in more depth the difference between different year models and toyota models with the 3.4l (tacomas, tundras t100, 4runners), that would also be a great help.
Thanks!
2000 4runner was 2wd.
2004 tacoma is 4wd.

I would think oil pan off a 2wd might be shaped differently since 4wd has the differential, so maybe fitment might be an issue unless modifying. Locations of various electrical connections may differ, again, modifications/fabrications.
Good luck!

I've been meaning to follow up and just remembered.
Not sure if the oil pans are different sizes but a 3.4l originally from a 2wd clears with no problem in a 4wd.
I don't remember if its 99 or 2000 but if using a later model 3.4l in an earlier model you'll need to use the injectors from the earlier model in a early model and vice versa. I think the 96-98 are grey and the 99-02 are gold color.
The intake hoses have a different MAF sensor so you'll just need to use the original intake from the car which the motor is going in.
Other than that there is nothing else needed. I have done the install with zero issues.
On the 03 and 04 5vz out of Tacomas i think the TPS sensor is completely different. Not sure how you can get around it other than using an earlier throttle body. (i haven't tried)
Hope this helps someone down the road.
