interchangeability of ifs third 2nd/3rd gen truck?

i know nothing about the vaccum accuated front diff found in so many of our trucks, but a friend of mine blew his gears up so... will an ifs third member out of an '86 truck with manuel locking hubs go into a '91 truck with the vaccum accuated diff? just the third member and they're both 4.10's
thanks

How did he blow a set of 4.10s up? Are you talking just swapping out the gears, or the entire center section? Yes, they are interchangeable, but you won't have the vacuum-actuated diff using the old third member. Which is fine, as long as you swap in a set of manual hubs. Did it on my 89...

The vacuum actuated part, that is off to the right... You should be able to chang the stuff out in the carrier. Make sure and check the backlash and pinion depth though, it might be slightly off when you change it...
