Hey, I was just reading over on the Xterra Owners Club boards and saw a post by a guy (not me ) who took his Xterra to a dealer to have some maintence done, and the next day he found a 14" Snap-On Ratchet stuck in his Driver's Side Rear Leafs, and it had been rubbing on the tire and wore it through a bit.

So just thought I'd let you all know to just give your trucks a good once over after taking it to the dealer (or any mechanic for that matter) to just to double check everything.

Man that sucks a person SHOULD NOT have to worry about crap like that. Let's just hope it was an honest mistake and that's not how the garage always runs! At least he scored a killer ratchet. Too bad it wasn't craftsman though...LOL

 

Hehe. A similar thing happened to me last year when I still owned my Camry. A month or so after I had taken it in for something (not at a dealer), I ended up finding a Snap-On ratchet in a nice, safe flat spot under the hood. A lot better than what I currently own! It also had the very common 12mm (or 14, can't remember) socket.

Score 1 for me!

 

I once found one of those magnets on a extendable handle thingy after a radiator shop worked on it

I have a complaint.

In the title of your post, "You might want to check out your truck after a trip to the dealer..." , are you suggesting only checking your truck when taking to a dealer, or all mechanics in general?

You would be ignorant to think this mistake would only happen at a dealer.

I am tired of all the dealer bashing. The tech left a wrench/ratchet on the vehicle, a tire became damaged. The manager agreed to two tires. Certainly not something requiring urgent dealer bashing across all the different forums.

If I leave a tool in your car, please return it. Id be most thankful. I am human also.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with Jay on this one. It seems that this was a mistake and nothing malicious.

My experience has been if you treat them nicely, they'll pay it back double. Sure, I've had bad experiences and I've told many-o' persons not to go to Downey Toyota, but my current dealership is great.

One time after going to a local shop (not a dealership ) I looked under my runner and saw 5 shop towels jammed under the skidplate. Hey new towels for me

Sounds like you got an oil change and they were trying to sop up the oil. How do I know? That's how I do my oil changes too! I don't take the skid plate off.

This seems to happen pretty often. On my last truck, I found a nice 1/2 drive Snap-on rachet and a Snap-on prybar sitting on top of my spare tire. I saw the lime green handle of the pry bar sticking out. I guess this was about $200 worth of tools so I returned them right to the shop. The owner was a little embarassed, but very thankful. He said he would have gone mad looking for that rachet.

I'm sorry about that Jay, I wasn't trying to imply that it was only with dealers, it's just the first time i've heard of something like this happening. I wasn't trying to bash dealers, I actually haven't had a single problem with any dealers I've been to (well I've only really been to two Toyota Escondido, and Quality Nissan in Temecula )

I figured I'd just give everyone a heads up that sometimes tools can be left in or on your truck, not just at the dealer, but at any mechanic; and to just keep an eye out.

So I'm sorry if I came off sounding like I was bashing dealers Jay, I wasn't trying to.

I too have found shop towels on the front skidplate. Towles for me since I had driven 250+ miles to school like that and wasn't about to take some towels back that far! Tools I would've returned the next time I was home.
