I think my '91 4WD Runner should really be called a 4x3. The rear has only one drive wheel and both front wheels are drive wheels.

Do you have a broken rear axle? or do you have a front locker?

Either case a stock 91 4x4 has open diffs, so you only have 2 drive wheels.

4x4 should mean 4 wheels that have power to them x 4 fully driven wheels
so with no lockers you have a 4x2
one locker you have a 4x3
2 lockers you have a 4x4

4x4 means 4 wheels with 4 wheels driving now. But originally...

oh, and 4x4 means 4 wheels, all of which can be driven, not 4 speed by 4 wheels.
I though a 2X4 was a piece of lumber, and a 4X2 was a truck?

uhm...i think you guys are a little confused to how an open differential works....

if you have a 4x4 and have traction all the wheels have the same amount of torque....on slick turrain the tire with the most about of torque can only have as much as the one slipping....so you wont have traction, a locker or lsd will keep the torque evenly disperced regardless of the slipping wheel....

so if you have 4x2 you have 4 wheels with 2 torque applying wheels....4x4 is 4 wheels with 4 torque ap...well you get it....

that's the most ignorant thing I've seen in a while...some of those trophy trucks are built to go 70mph plus in harsh desert terrain....Can your truck handle that??? and I'm not talkin' about a flat graded roads either....
I've seen some built up "pre-runner pieces of crap" that I'd kill for....and like someone else already mentioned, some of them are 4wd so they can go wherever u go, plus do it faster and better....next time think before u post

Go in a straight line on even pavement with a 4x4 and all 4 wheels will have traction.

Usually when a truck is refered to as a 4x2, it's a "prerunner" type of truck that has a 4wd suspension, but is missing the t-case and front diff.

Your regular 2wd trucks are never called a 4x2, just a "2wd"

then I have a 4x5.

I think I actually have a 4x5.1x1 since I have "reverse" and I have a spare tire.

Hmmm no mention of FWD (now Seagrave) one of the first four wheel drive manufacturers around 1909. No confusion in their name FWD (four wheel drive).

those pieces of crap not only go 70 mph over 3 foot dips, a real pre runner will reach 120 and jump 60 feet. i dont wanna start a thread war or nothing but its diffrent strokes for diffrent folks. your not gonna be able to do that kinda speed over whoops with a transfer case and the low gearing that most 4x4's have.

Yeah I think the pre-runner is a nice vehicle....if you need a pick up and dont live where it snows then you dont need a 4x4.....what is the point unless you off-road? and how many truck owners offroad .5%?

Only reason I got a 4x4 is because I own a house in MD and it snows quite a bit there sometimes....

Obviously those of us that don't appreciate 2 wheel drive have never been to a CORR race. http://www.corracing.com/ I've been going since back in 1976 when it was called the Brush run 101 and even raced in the Good Ol Boys heat in 80 and 81 (not a forgiving race for my 79 Yota PU) we had mud holes up to the middle of my doors back then. Ah the good ol days.
