i hate mine in my 85... in the summer i have no where to hide and in so cal the sun will burn you in no time... way to much glass not enough protection.. oh and its aftermarket and has no cover, if i had the choice id definitely go with no sunroof

Aviator: Sunroofs do not necessarily weaken the structure of the roof. Aftermarket sunroofs, yes they make the roof very weak. But factory sunroofs in cars with pop-up non electric roofs actually make them stronger! They add a ton of bracing and instead of just being a flat panel, it acts similar to an "I" beam, to allow less flex.[/QUOTE]
x2!!!...I have owned both and I will say that my single cab w/out sunroof was so WEAK compared to the stiffness in my xcab w/factory sunroof. The roof is much stronger on a factory sunroof toy truck versus non./

Wasn't looking for one but it came with the truck so....
No leaks. Don't know about strength, but I wheel (mild to lightly moderate) with 2-3 5 gallon solar showers about a foot or two behind it, tied to the front of the rack, without a sound. If I tie them up near the back of the truck it sounds like oilcan city up there.
Now I've done did jinxed myself with that whole leak thing, didn't I?

I think it would suck out loud if I didn't have a sunroof. I enjoy the airflow and the sun, as well as the stars on a mild night. As for water leakage...YUP, I had that too. I solved it by thoroughly cleaning all of the rubber around my glass and the metal frame that the rubber comes in contact with. Last winter I had some pretty bad leakage, and after my cleaning I've been dry as a bone. It's like a h20 proof camera. A single grain of sand in the seal can f-up the whole thing.

No sun roof. Extra hassle if it leaks or breaks and like others said, no where to hide from the sun in a pickup. I'm perfectly happy with my slider rear window.

Remember that this thread is for 3rd gen sunroofs since it seems people are confusing the issue with older non-power sunroofs and with no sunshades. The modern ones are obviously improved over the older Toyota versions.
I love mine and wouldn't want a Runner w/o one.

I fully second this. Sunroof open and back window down at 60mph will barely ruffle your hair.

Mine is electic. Notice how toyota put that little screw function near the maplights that allow you to still close it even if the motor fails????
I use mine, some times ill open it, not too often.
But for the longest time i would drive around with the cover back so i could still see outside. Lately ive just had the cover closed so it acts of no sunroof.
I like mine!!!!!

Since I use my sunroof pretty much year-round it gets a workout. No problems with malfunctions or leaks. The 2nd Generation 4Runners had a manual crank so you could close it in the event of motor failure. The 3rd Generations don't have that - probably because Toyota figured the reliability didn't warrant the need for it.

I didn't search for a truck with it when I bought mine but it happened to have it. I hardly ever use it as the sun is plenty strong here, it is nice when driving a looking up at nice views but I would rather have more headroom.

They all leak a little, it just drains out the drain tubes. Those must be kept clear or you will have a problem.
Whoever said the aftermarket ones don't have the drains was wrong. The good ones do! I have an aftermarket one on my Altima and it is awesome (it is a Webasto). It will even close on its own when you turn the car off. It doesn't have the horrible Toyota pause either. The only negative to it, is there is no solid headliner. The headliner is just stretched from it to the sides...no hard cardboard support. That is the only negative....and it does have a cover. That one is 12 years old and has never leaked.
I love the one on my 4Runner except for the pause when it closes. The Sequoia one does not do that. I mostly keep mine closed and just use the glass. I have them on all my cars except the Jeep (I just take the top off of it). I will always have one.
