Aughh.. Stupid parts monkeys!! "Can't find it.." So what. that means it does not exisit??

This is the part # for my 92.. 82219-35010 "Wire, sensor" $8.29See if Mr. Stupid can find one with that refrence #.. I will warn you, the knock sensor harness off my 90 pickup parts truck was diffrent than my 92 4Runner.. But that may point him to where he can find yours...

A knock sensor is used to sense detonation. When detonation is detected, the ECU can retard timing to compensate. The problem is that the knock sensors are very fragile. One good knock caused by excessive load, or bad gas, or a backfire can kill it instantly.. :pat:

Hey, thanks, I'll go to the dealership tomorrow and order it up. The guy that I usually get all my stuff from wasn't there, so the guy that was there couldn't help me too much. It's always nice to have a connection in the dealership.

Hey, I forgot to tell you, congradulations on the upcoming baby!

So, now that I've found out where the wire goes, I'm about to crap! I didn't realize that it was UNDER the intake manifold. I just thought it was in that sensor cluster at the back of the manifold. Do I have to get new intake manifold gaskets now? They're $56 a piece! I've already spent WAAAAY to much money on that truck. So, any suggestions?

Sorry to say, but you have to remove the intake to get to it. I dont think it would be a good idea to reuse the gaskets....I guess you could but that would be risky. Ya it sucks but what can you do?

Yep, you are screwed.. That is why I said it was so very important to change while you are at it, you have to pull it right down to the heads (intake & plenum off) You may be able to reuse the intake gaskets, they are steel and rubber... But you "may"have to tear it apart in 2 weeks for an intake leak... Btw, I would use a good gasket tack (not silicoln, but a high tack gasket cement) on the intake to pleunm gasket.. it is a bugger to get that plunum on with all the hoses, this will keep it from getting damaged a little more..
Sorry my friend, I wish I had better news.. But I told you so..

OK, speaking theoreticaly, what would not replacing the knock sensor wire do? It was weird today, I dissconnected my battery again for about 3 hours, and the check engine light didn't show up. then I start it again and there it is ! So, what am I looking at in costs for labor? I'm SOOOOOO tired of banging my hands up, and becoming farther into debt. Sorry for the complaining, I'm just tired of these things. Thanks for all your help and knowlage Firefyter-Emt, I really appricate it.

Also, just to add. For all of you that have seen my post about camping, would it be bad on my engine to drive over stevens pass?

I have to change my input from earlier....
Bud, if youre having trouble, dont be in such a hurry to run your rig. Get it fixed right. Either do it yourself & save the coin, or have it done if youre that disgusted..... but get it done. Youve too much time and cash into it to go out and "horse it up."

Well, IMHO.. once you have been there, it is not that hard to go back in.. (trust me I know..) For the amount of labor you would have to pay to have someone tear her down just to get to that wire (a 3 second job to change..) I could not bring myself to pay someone mucho $$ just to do it. As for not doing it, you really do not have that option... You will burn it up by running it that way (I am not positive, but I am pretty sure it leans the fuel mixture way down to compensate.. (which it can burn the valves..) Or, it will richen it up, in which case it will plug the cat, and I believe ruin the O2 sensor.. So, you really have to get back into it and fix it..

I can safely say I feel your pain.. I am going to sneak my Runner out Saturday for a mild run and then bring her over to the shop that built the heads and he is going to find out what went wrong.. (His tab at this point) If he has to pull the heads off, I am going to give him the go ahead to pull her out and do the whole thing from bottom to top.. I had a nice 150+ compression bottom end when I started last year with a burnt valve.. All the valves were leaking 5k later. I really wish I had done a new test after I put her togather this last time.. When I started having trouble at idle it was around the 100psi point on the good cylinders.. Which is way too low. But why?? I will leave it to him to find out.. If the bottom end is getting tired and it is not all valve problems (#5 intake IS open though..) I am going to up the anty to spend the 2K or so to have him just keep going...

Sigh~~ Will she ever be back to the way she was... (I put about 100k on here with nary a problem, but the last 10k have made me want to sell it at least a dozen times...

Oh well, It looks like I am picking up a Wrangler next week... New daily driver for work...

OH BTW.. Please, call me Lee...

Thanks Lee, I'll just get in there and fix it. I'll take saturday to do it. I get payed tomorrow, so I'll go and pick up the manifold seals $$$ Maybe my camping trip will be cancled, but I'd much rather have my truck running right

Hey! That's sweet that you got your engine in and running. Sorry about you knock sensor though. I had mine go bad on me a while ago and I replaced it about 3 months ago. Mine came up as a code 52 also. It cost about $160 for the sensor and another $14.00 for the wire. Plus all the gaskets and what not. I'd do it again in a heart beat. I think the local shop wanted $300 to do it. Saved almost enough money for 3 MT classic II rims.

Well, I hope it all works out.
Have fun all.

Ok, here's the kicker. The check engine light isn't on anymore! I popped the hood and guess what? The connection that's right below the TB wasn't connected all the way!

Lee, It WAS the knock sensor wire! I couldn't believe it! I'm keeping the wire, because I know that it'll go out on this engine. When I don't know, but at least I have it.
