I got my engine running!!!! It's taken a looong time, but it's done. I just want to say thanks to everyone, especially Firefyter-Emt for all your knowage, and DayrlD for the injectors. Now I get to wear it in and start with the mods again!!!

 

Well done, glad to hear it. Although I'm sure it was a real headache at times, you probably learned a ton of new things!

That's for sure! It was very crazy at times. I was sooo close to just selling my truck at one point, but I'm gald I didn't! Although putting in a new engine and firing it up can't go perfect, right? I've got a fairly good oil leak from the back of the valve cover on the passenger side. So, I put some RTV hi temp gasket stuff on it and tightened the bolts that I could get to. So, I'll see how it works in a little while. It's quite an expirance and you definatily learn a whole lot about engines. Thanks again for all your help!

 

Really?? I assume you did not replace the gaskets?? Also, the FSM tells you to dab some FIPG (RTV) at the corner where the cam shaft caps meet the head.. (4 spots) Also, you have that rear cover on the back of the cam, Right?? You know, that little black circle held in with 2 6mm bolts right at the back of the cam...

If you need some new valve cover gaskets, let me know.. I have 2 brand new ones from Toyota.. You can have them for shipping...

 

With my long block came a full gasket set. That included valve cover gaskets. Hopefully it seals, but if it doesn't then I'll have to take the plenum off, AGAIN!!! I'm not getting my hopes up, so I'm pulling out all the tools again for this. The funny thing is, it doesn't seem near as intimidating as before!

 

So tell us... what was your total bill to get up & running?? Rebuilt engine? Who did the rebuild?? What kind of warr. did you get?

Well all the same let me know.. Starang thing is that the valve cover design is very good and does not lend it self to leak all that much.. Seems strange. But if it's gonna leak, the right side it will be!!! I see you took my advice on the head set for the gaskets... amazing how many are in there, Eh??

 

The total bill, including misc./broken tools, engine, parts, etc. $4,000. Not bad considering every one around here wants at least 4 grand for a long block with a core charge. From the pictures, my core is toast, so I didn't return the core. It was build by Import Engine Specialties http://importenginespecialties.com/ and he's selling on e-bay. I got the long block with a gasket set for $3,000 SHIPPED to seattle from NY. It took a while to do the whole shipping, but it came in good quality. The rest was all the replacement parts, tools, and oils, cleaners, and bandaids.

All in all I had a good expirance doing this, if I had to do it over again, I would have if I had more time, and another mode of transportation. If any one has questions just ask, I learned about everything on these engines. Thanks again for all the info.

I can't tell if can be fixed or not. So, if it can then I'll find some place around here to sell them to, unless anyone here want's them?

 

Also, I would imagine that the "check engine" lights would be on since there is a new engine, right? Also, I put some more RTV sealer on the leaky valve cover. Is this a perminant fix or would it be teporary? Anyways, I've just been driving it easy around town, and I'm going to change the oil at 100 miles. It's amazing how much more smooth it sounds than the old engine.

 

Sorry to bear bad news... But there should not be any check engine lights on... Try disconnectiong the battery for a couple hours and see what happens...

 

Ok, I got a code 52 which is the knock sensor. Could it have gone bad? or could it just be a connection? I'm taking the plenum off again to seal the oil leak, so, I'll just fix it then.

 

Those knock sensors are famous for going bad once they have been disturbed. It could be the connection, or the wire could be pinched somewere. Should be easy to tell once you get the plenuim off. I'd replace it just to be on the safe side.

 

Did you take my advise and replace that harness from the wire harness to the knock sensor?? If not shame on you... If you have to pull it down, call about a new knock sensor... I do not know how much $$ they are, but it may be worth just replacing.. no matter what, you should have a new harness.. They are cheap and fail eaisly (BTW.. Yes you really need that sensor working)

 

I tried to take your advice on the knock sensor wire, but the guy couldn't find the part #. Also what exactly does the knock sensor do?
