wiring trailer lights

My 98 4runner did not come with tow hitch, bought one at a junkyard complete w/ wiring harness. Anybody know how hard or easy it would be to wire this up so trailer lights would work when plugged in? Thanks

If you want to set up the standard flat-4 pin connector it's not too hard. You'll need to run to Walmart or any auto parts store and pick up a tail light converter. Just splice it in near your rear lights ( I believe you can pull off the side panels in the back near the lift gate to access the rear lights that you'll need to splice into).

Check out all the adapters the store has because you may also find one that doesn't require any wire cutting/splicing and it'll just plug in to the existing connectors in your truck.

Maybe someone else can confirm that though.

If you do have the complete wiring harness, it is as simple as pulling apart some of the rear compartment and paneling and hooking the harness in - it is plug and play. I believe the factory harness plugs in on the left side.

If it turns out you need the harness, I would order from somewhere like etrailer.com. The harness i got from them hooked in to the right rear side.
