How long do you think it should take to wire 4 auxillary lights mounted on a roof rack? I'm interested in an estimate to run the wires to the battery/fuse and hook-up the light switch.

I've never done any type of electrical work on my 4Runner, or even my home. I'd like to save money and do some of the work. I'm thinking of mounting the lights and snaking the wires through the truck myself. One less thing for the shop to do. I just haven't decided whether to run the wires back to the rear door or run them down the front passenger door frame behind the rubber/foam door seal.

Any input and/or advice is appreciated.

I STRONGLY suggest that you do it yourself. I was a little intimidated to do any wiring myself but I had a lot of fun with it (yeah, I'm weird like that).

Since this is your first time, expect to take a while but it'll be worth it. You'll know your rig that much better when you're all done. Think about using relays too. It's cheap insurance.

If you plan on doing any more wiring to your rig I'd suggest doing Corey's mod for the auxiliary fuse box too.

Depends on how fancy you want to get and well you want to conceal the wires. You could run wires from the lights right to the battery through hood in about 10 min .

Seriously, though, plan on removing the covers on your console to install the on/off switch and run wires through the firewall (I would reccomend a factory hole). You may also end up removing side/ceiling panel to get wires to the roof (or use Corey's method of going through the door weather stripping). Other than that, its just measuring wire, cutting, stripping, and crimping on fittings. Shrink wrap also helps protect connections plus makes the wiring look nicer.

Finally, when I did my lights + 30 Amp relay + dash mounted switch, it took me about 3 hours. That was running the wires along the celing (right next to sunroof wiring) and out the roof to the lights.

 

I can rewire all my roof lights in a little over an hour - 3 sets of them. For a beginner, I'd probably figure 2 hours, depending on where you want to run the wires. Along the floor will probably be easier/faster than in the headliner.

 

if i were you i wouldnt try and run the wires through the headliner, its a huge pain, much easyer to run through the carpet and out a stock hole in the firewall.

the first time i wired a set of lights on my rollbar it took me about 2 1/2 hours to get it right how i wanted it. but i also couldnt figure out how to make the light on the switch turn on....finally figured it out...

Thanks for all the input. I will try to wire the lights myself. The worst that could happen is that I have to have the shop correct a mistake. I don't know how I missed those tech reports on aux lighting, I thought I checked.
