I have an old warn winch lying around. It's a Z3500. I was thinking about puttin it on the runner, but then realized the curb weight is like 3700 lbs. Should I get a bigger winch? Should I get a TJM or just build a custom bracket? Would that winch even fit in a TJM?

 

You'll most certainly need a bigger winch!

Get the TJM, and an M8000.

You ought to just sell that winch and use the profit to offset buying a new one. I'm told the ideal is to have a winch with the weight capacity double of your vehicle weight.

 

Probably would work better than nothing, if the bracket fab costs are not too much. You can always pick up a pulley/snatch block and double-line it for heavy pulls (doubles the pulling force). I have a 9000# Warn on my '85 and the first time I used it, I stalled it out (pulling the truck out of axle-deep wet snow). But most of the time, you don't need the full pulling force.

 

Actually the rule of thumb to follow is to get a winch that is 1.5x the vehicle's weight.

 

I thought of that, but my dad kinda wants to put it on his car trailor if I don't use it. I'm going to stop by the dump and use their scales to see exactly what my rig weighs with everything I might have in it on a trip.

I'm goin to a trk stop CAT scales lets you divide weight per axle...with the BUdbult skidplate and other stuff just wondering how the weight is divided per axle

 

I'm at school in Chattanooga most of the time. If not there back home in Hickman County(where the winch is). I'll definately let ya know about the winch. The CAT scales is a good idea.

i thought 4runners weighed more than that, i think on my door tag it says 5200lbs, is that the actual weight?

 

That is the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), that is the weight of the vehicle plus the full cargo load.
