Will 275/70/16 fit?

I tried a search, and no results were returned. I have a 98 4Runner 4x4 SR5, and I saw in this forum that you guys recommend 265/75/16 as the max increase in tire size on the stock suspension. However when I called TIRERACK, they said I could go with a 275/70/16 with no problems. Pep Boys also told me the same thing. So what do you guys think? Is there an advantage of one over the other? I just want something that looks tough, and won't be doing a ton of off-roading. I've been looking at the All Terrains, and the Mud Terrains due to the great look of those bad boys. Suggestions and feedback please!! Thanks.

Yes they will fit. And don't buy tires from Pep Boys, I personally would only consider Discount Tire or Tire Rack.

unless your doing a ton of offroading, dont get the mud terrains, sure they look bad ass, and perform even better. but its just not a tire for a truck thats not going to leave the street... ive gotten 50k out of the set i have on now, about 20k more than i expected to get, but they are REALLY loud and dont ride on the highway too great. check out the nitto terragrappler also

I had Michelin 275/70R16s on my unlifted 4Runner and they worked out great. I recently went to a 265/75R16, which is slightly taller and slightly narrower. I miss the width of the 275...I just wish I could buy the BFG A/T KO in a 275/75R16.

My last set of tires were 275/70/16. No issues.
I had heard that the speedo would be off, but since I am running tires even further off (255/70/16? -- buddy gave me 2 sets for free), so it wasnt a big deal for me.
If you are on the road most of the time, go with a decent street tire.
Mud tires were too noisy and rough for me. (I put on 30-40k miles/yr)

good luck

beleive it or not, they are almost identical tire sizes....

The 265/75/16's are 31.6 inches tall and 10.4 inches wide.
The 275/70/16's are 31.2 inches tall and 10.8 inches wide.

Thanks guys! I think a bit wider would be better, with a mild height increase, thus the 275/70/16. So....the Nitto Terra Grappler was mentioned, any others? I guess I'm looking for the most aggressive looking ALL TERRAIN, with reasonable price and performance! Peace.

I just picked up a set of Kuhmo Road Venture A/T's in 265/75/16's I really like them, they grab good off road, and the tread keeps itself pretty clean. Check them out, they were very cheap for the tire, and I think IMHO a wonderful tire for the money!!

I have been running a set of 275/70/16 Dueller Revos for the last 50K with no pronlems. They didn't rub on my '02 Sport. They are getting loud now, but they worked great in the rain. I had a set of 265s before and they worked well also, but the 275s were a bit wider, which I liked better.

My experience is that BFG A/T's are as quiet as street tires and better in the snow than M/T's. I've had 3 sets of A/T's on 4Runners and an 80, GY MT/R's on the 80 and A/T's and M/T's on the 40. The MT/R's on my 80 - they were better on the rocks and in the snow than the M/T's, although the M/T's sometimes really come through if there's a little sand on the rocks. The only problem with A/T's is the sidewalls are vulnerable - I'd say go with Discount and get the warranty...

I run 275/70/16 A/T's now on my '99 4Runner with no problems. I'm thinking of going with 1.5" front and 2.5" back spacers from cornfedsuspension.com - what size could I go to with those?
