Whip Antenna
Just to make sure im not crazy, someone back be up. My dad is getting me the taco whip antenna for christmas, when he went to get it the dealership they told him he only needed the antenna and not the non-motorized unit. I did my search and read that everyone had used both.
Someone please confirm my findings that I do need both parts.

Are you doing the "Taco Whip Mod" where you replace your current motorized antenna with the solid taco whip?
If this is the case then you DO need the taco stationary base as well. It will NOT work if you keep the motorized base.

I second the above. I did the whip mod and I needed both parts as well. I don't know if this has been mentioned already, but the wire harness that goes to the motorized unit will not be needed after you do the whip mod. So what I did was pull the wire through the fender into the hood aread (near the cruise control), taped the connector end really well, and tied it to the main wiring harness under the hood nearby. Have fun!

yea i thought the base model 4runners came with out a power antenna.
so far my motorized hasnt failed me yet. about once every 6 months i give it a nice coat of grease, run it up and down, then wipe off the excess.

I did the whip antenna mod today for my 2000 4runner. It was tedious, and it took me a little over 2 hours to do. The most difficult part was pulling back the black trim from the wheel well. I suggest this fix for anyone who has a power antenna problem. I fixed the power antenna once after 4 years of use. While I'm upgrading my sound system, I decided to do this perminant fix before it broke again.

Just to further clarify, you WILL need to non motorized unit. I did this a while ago, the only really pain in the arse part is getting the little plastic clips out wihtout breaking them. I ended up drilling mine out and getting new ones from the dealership.

Pretty sweet mod to do, but you'll need both pieces to complete it--you can access the antenna motor thru the fender on the ps. I just took mine out filled the hole, primed, and painted it and just went with an interior mounted antenna!

Me too - I had to remove the plastic clips with the dremel. I replaced the clips with some plastic screws that I bought from Lowe's. The clips were designed for dry wall attachments, but they seem to work for this application. Just in case they don't, do you still have the part number for the toyota replacement clips? How much were they?
