where o' where are the Optima 34R's?

I have been ALL OVER Las Vegas trying to find one and noone says they can even order one. Autozone, Carquest, Checker, local parts stores. They all say Optima just send them 4 or 5 models none of which are the reverse post ones. Anyone have a good line on them?

There's no part number per se for a 3rd gen, it is just a battery. If you want a Yellow Top, I say get the D34/78...you just want a basic yellow or red, but if you are cranking get red, running lots of accessories get a 2nd yellow w/ the red

Just run your lights off an auxiliary fuse box like I had on my 3rd gen, cost like $10 at the local parts place and was an easy mod. Never had a problem.

Ok, so just to clarify for me...2nd gen 4runner's need a Reversed pole battery? This means the Pos/Neg terminals are on switched sides from a "normal" battery? Which Red Top does a 95 3.0 need? This is confusing

no... 2nd gens need the regular one...

you just need a way to space it if you use the stock battery hold-down bracket...

^^ I am using a Blue top from Costco (starting/charging Marine...pretty much a Red top with extra poles) in my 95 4Runner for almost a year now and it works like a champ

Just be sure to get the spacer for the battery - you might have to call Optima for it but they will send you one for free if you ask.

Romad...at the moment, I'm following your 'heavier gauge battery wire' write up, dealing with electical problems. I have a couple questions... How do I get that 80A alternator fuse out? Do I even need to, cuz I just wanted to make sure it's not blown, and I couldn't really tell just by looking at the top of it, I don't think? That thing is a pain to get to, so I'd hate to do it all again. Also, I suck at soldering, but I got a bunch down on the new wire, and got the crimp on it, do you think it will be ok? Thanks!

You have to get the fuse out to to the mod - the fuse comes out the bottom of the whole assembly. (from memory) the assembly is bolted to the fender and/or/also it is a slip fit on the brackets to the fender.

What you need to do is look around the perimeter of the bottom side of the assembly (the box that is holding the fuse and several other relays and the like) and notice that the bottom side can be removed.

You need to gain access to the fuse by removing the bottom of the relay box assembly and then the fuse will push out from the top side, down, and out the now open and exposed bottom. There may be some little 'arms' that need to be squeezed in on the top of the fuse to get it to slide down - it sounds more complicated than it is. Just look at it and it should make sense.

0 - DISCONNECT THE BATTERY!
1 - gain access to the bottom of the fuse/relay box
2 - remove the bottom of the fuse/relay box
3 - remove the fuse out the bottom and then begin to note the position and location of all the wires on the fuse so you can do the upgraded wire mod.

Let me know if you see improvement after you do this - it fixed every one of the problems I had as well as adding a noticeable amount of pep in the low to mid range part throttle acceleration.

Good luck!

Its really easy, just go slow and look at things closely and you will see how simple it is.

Here is the link to the original mini write up
