Where to get a 170* thermostat?

Does anyone know where I can find a 170* thermostat for a Toyota pickup? I know A/C Delco makes a 170* stat for domestic applications, but I can't find one for a Toyota.

The local autoparts stores carry the 160*, 180* and stock 195's, but no 170* ones. I tried the local dealership and even they couldn't find a 170* listing in their TRD catalog.

I have a flexalite 165 and a 170* stat would be the perfect solution for my setup. The 180* is a little too hot in city traffic while the 160* is too cold. I have "idle kickdown" problems with the 160*. However, a 170* would be perfect, but where can I find one?

Napa Autoparts has 'em.

I'm running a 160* now and have heard (Thanks Dr. Z!) that the 170* is a better fit in terms of mileage versus power. I'll be switching to a 170* when I do my timing belt and water pump in the next couple of weeks.

I have a 160° thermo, too. I'll be switching to a 170° when I flush my coolant again.

I noticed a drop of 1.2 mpg when I installed the 160° thermostat. I figure I'll gain most of that back when I install a 170°.

Hey, thanks alot guys. You wouldn't happen to have a part# for it? I need one for a 22r/22re.

I just want to be "prepared" just in case they give me the "duh, what the heck are you talking about" look. LOL!

A 160* thermostat would decrease mileage because of the fan turning on and water circulating too many times in so little time, I'm assuming?

KING-

I believe it has to do with the reduction in head temperature. Less heat = greater fuel consumption per stroke. I think that is why. One of these guys will chime in and confirm I am sure.

Copy that.

Will the engine run cooler though?

It has more to do with efficient combustion taking place at a certain temperature range than running the fan turning on too often.

Toyota engines run really hot so they have cleaner emmisions. I went with the TRD thermostat because I was pinging a bit. IT's not the greatest fix, but it barely pings anymore and I did not notice any decrease in mileage.

Out of the box it's 180*; the TRD is 160* but seems to be a bit cool which (as others have said) reduces efficiency (aka mileage!) so that's the sudden interest in the 170* option.

Mikedog; sorry, I don't have a part number - I'm in the same boat as you when I walk in there in the next couple of days.

Mark,

I went to my local NAPA parts store today and tried to get a 170* thermostat. Well, let's just say that you can save yourself the trip because they had NO listing for a 170* stat for a Toyota. They had just the normal 160*, 180* and the stock 195*.

So, I don't know what the deal is. I think somebody is pulling our legs here. I even had the NAPA parts guy cross-reference all the 170* thermostats he had to see if one would work in a Toyota application.

One 170* stat was for the "heavy-duty" Dodge V10 application. Too big. Another one was for a certain model BMW. Totally different design than the Toyota one. It was kind of weird looking too.

The third and last 170* stat he checked was NAPA part no. THM 369-170, but it didn't show an application description. Unfortunately, he didn't have that particular one in stock.

Hmmm... well, I know one person (Dr. Zhivago from here on the forum) that found one at NAPA, it may be the last one you found. He's the one that put the bug in my ear to make this switch (I tend to be a guinea pig for him).

I know he's pretty busy with work these days but I'll drop him a line to get a part number and/or comment in the thread.

I've heard from Galen! (Dr. Z)

THM-17

A parts guy at NAPA_may_tell you it's not for the 3.4L, but it is the one you need.
Thanks G!

I didn't personally find the NAPA part, Gadget did. He includes it in his URD Fuel kits as well. The NAPA 170* T-Stat that fits the 3.4L 5VZ-FE is THM-17. You can find it on their website. The t-stats are not interchangeable between the 22R and the 5VZ-FE.

I don't know of a 170* t-stat for the 22R, only the ones already mentioned.

Peace.

Here's a link to the NAPA 170* T-Stat on their website.

Here's a pic of it:

Here's a pic of the T-Stat for the 22R:

As for what I said about them not being interchangeable, I have never personally tried it, but as you can see from the pics, they are quite different. The 170*_might_fit in the 22R, but there probably is a fitment issue with regards to diameter and depth of the T-Stat housing. Someone will have to try it out to know for sure.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info and pics Dr. Z!

I don't think I want to even try to see if it works in a 22r. They look totally different to me. The 5VZ-FE stat looks alot smaller in diameter than the 22r style thermostat and the increased depth of the 5VZ-FE stat assembly is probably going to be another issue if you try to use it on the 22r series motor.

Dagnabit! I guess my quest still continues in trying to find a 170* thermostat for a 22r/re series motor then.
