I personally don't own one, but I've read nothing but bad thing about them. Alot of people are seeing drastic decline in mpg and no performance gain. Here's a link:

I had one in my 22re and I liked it. Pros were a little performace gain and roughtly the same mpg. Cons were inadiquet filtration because of the lage gaps in the weve. I had a lot more gain for less money when I switched to the cone filter (just a cheep one, not K&N).

I started out with the K&N drop in filter and noticed no changes + or - while using it for about 6 months. I then went with the full K&N FIPK and I have noticed some slight performance gains. No improvement on the gas mileage. I've left it in since it has boosted (or so I perceive) performance a little, and it is the last air filter I'll ever need for that vehicle. But overall it wasn't worth the $$.

i have the whole K&N FIPK, but i didn't buy it. it came with the truck when i bought it. i've always read that it doesn't help that much, and since i never drove a 22re without one, i can't really comment. i still get good milage (20-22, mixed highway/city). last weekend a friend of mine was riding in my truck and he said that my truck ('89 4runner, 22re, 230k miles) accelerated better than his ('88 4runner, 22re, 180k miles). and one time when he was wasted, i drove his truck home and it did feel more sluggish than mine. my guess is that the FIPK doesn't help much with overall power and stuff, but in town it helps with throttle response and makes you feel like you have more power.

Dropped one in my V6 4Runner 2 months ago and noticed a slight accel. gain, but nothing to shout about. The $$ is worth it to me because I was changing the paper filters at least twice/thrice a year due to the Arizona dust, so I'm pleased with it.
