I've read several places about autozone selling 3rd gen rebuilt CV axles with a lifetime warranty. Ive been hearing like 80-90 bucks per CV axle... I called them just now and they quoted me for 124 for rebuilt cv axles. Im in southern california.. does that make a difference? =(

the guy i spoke to also said 4/5 axles they sell don't come back but some occasionally do return due to defects. This got me thinking "people probably return their second one that needed replacement so they can get a built axle for free". Has anyone had any bad experiencse with rebuilt CV axles from autozone?

 

There was a recent thread on the WA chapter TTORA board that talked about this... Yes, some folks have issues with non-OEM CVs, from what I've seen, it's a crapshoot as to where the CV actually comes from. The only way you can "really" know (and it's still a question) is to get them from Toyota.

Personally, both of my CVs are now from Schucks - I've snapped both of the OEMs on different occasions. The replacements have been fine, but I haven't been out a lot in the last year.


To answer your basic thread question - I just scored a PAIR of original OEM CVs for $90 shipped off of eBay. They're said to have about 40k on them, but at that price, that's okay with me.

 

Pep boys is now doing the lifetime warranty, think I paid $115 for one. It had a leak but I caught it before I installed it and got another one. Just inspect them when you get them.

 

I just looked under the truck and found mine. Not hard really, you just look next to your front wheels and there they should be, with the harmonica looking boot and all.

Anyway, even though I never had to replace mine (yet, knock on wood), I hear a lot of people are having good success from just getting lifetime warranty boots from different places. When you think about it, spending either $90 or $150 isn't that big of a difference considering you'll get new ones for the lifetime of a TOYOTA . On the other hand, if you don't plan to off-road your rig much and thus break your CV's, I'd just get OEMs as they are reliable for a long time (street driving).

 

i get 'em for $70ish (after core return) from advance auto parts. dunno if you have any in your neck of the woods.

 

Get Toyota axles from a junkyard and replace the boots.

 

thanks for the responses. I will have to look for advance auto parts in my area. I don't wheel much as im a poor college student trying to save money by doing his own repairs... that will hopefully change once i get a good job :-D

ebay is interested, i have never botehred to look there for auto parts... that is probably a huge mistake on my part
