when should my gears shift? (automatic)

Okay guys! Just got the timing belt changed and as soon as I jumped in the truck, I felt like it wasn't shifting at the same times as it was before. For instance, at 40mph I'm still in second gear. I'm wondering if the timing belt controls when the vehicle shifts? and perhaps the garage needs to take another look. Thanks for reading and helping.

Was the vehicle temp cold? When its cold the ECU holds the shift longer so as to not lug the engine and warm the engine up.

There is no set RPM that the vehicle shifts at every time. It changes depending on engine load and throttle position.

The timing belt has NOTHING to do with how the vehicle shifts.

Scuba's right. On a cold start, one of two conditions need to be met for a 2nd-3rd gear shift. Either water temp is 130F or higher, OR you've exceeded 2600RPM. If it's hanging on longer than that, there might be a problem. Once it's shifted to 3rd gear the first time, however, it should not do that high RPM shift again. Until your next cold start, of course.
