I wanted to get like a 2.5 some odd lift so I can put 31's or 32 BFG A/T KO's on...would I have to regear? I was told that going to 4.88 would be the best match.

 

Since regearing is so expensive i'm putting it off as long as possible. My rule of thumb is that when 1st gear in low range is not low enough to do the terrain you want without stalling, its time.

What ratio to go to has a lot to do with your engine and tranny. 4.88 is good for V6 and automatic on 33s or 4cyl 5 speed on 33s.

I currently am on 32s with 4 cyl , 5 speed and 4.30 gears. I do stall on the hardest trails. I have to slide the clutch more than i'd like. I'm thinking about a crawler box transfer or 4.7 to 1 transfer reduction ratio (stock is 2.28 reduction) since that would be cheaper than regearing 2 diffs to 4.56 or 4.88. Both options are out of reach of my budget for now.

 

I believe glassjaw has a 2wd 3rd gen (see this thread ) , I'm not sure of which engine or tranny he has though.

Glassjaw, it kinda depends on your engine. Search around here because a couple people have asked about this a little while ago. My guess is that you don't have to regear, but you will feel a difference.

Somebody else who has done this can chime in here.

Well, I learned the hard way last month. I finally put on the 32x11.5x15's I've always wanted. It looked awesome and was fine for around town but on my trip up to Colorado it kept surging in and out of overdrive constantly on even the slightest of hills. My gas mileage dropped from 250 miles/tank to 150! :eek: I finally had to stop in Pueblo and downsize back to the 31x10.5x15's and the problem went away . Too bad the 2nd gens don't have any power to spare for this mod. The 32's are way cool and fit easily under a slightly lifted 4Runner. My next Toy will have a V8 for sure...

 

Depends what you got from the factory? 4.10's will probably be fine with 31's or 32's and a V6.

33's or 285's will require the 4.88's. Or at least you'll feel the loss of power for sure.
