Hi all! Nice site! I need your opinion on the best method for removal of the clearcoat on my oem 15x7 alloy wheels. I plan to upgrade my Bridgestone 31x10.5x15's soon to BFG TA/KO 32x11.5x15's and thought this is the ideal time to tackle this project. I'd prefer to do the work on the vehicle (carefully) but will look at any suggestions you may have. I'll probably not re-coat them so please take that into consideration. Thanks.

 

Sandblast them.

Here is a good article by Ken on how to strip off the clear coat.

 

Bead blast them. It's not as harsh as sand and won't pit the aluminum.

Welcome aboard. Kool avatar pic...like a postcard. That link Corey posted should get you there. I know Eastwood company has all the stuff you need to high polish those nekkid wheels. Corey loves polishing his wheels. Post some before/after pics and do a write up. I've been thinking about high polishing parts of my wheels...

I followed Kens website and started doing my rims. I have only got two done so far I plan on finishing them this fall when I have more time. I found that a stripper called Zip in a yellow can worked way better than the 3m brand I tried first. The one mistake I made on the first one was I didnt get all the clear coat off there was some left in the nock and crannys that were a bitch to sand out. This job really sucks but they will look better when your done. Mine are not as shinny as the were before I refinished them but you have to look pretty hard to notice. I would like to get them REALLY shinny but Im not sure it would be worth all the time. Let me know how you like your 32" BF Goodrichs this is what I am thinking of doing. BF Goodrich for sure not so sure on the 32". I dont want to lose any power.
