Wheel Spacers On Solid Axils

What are the negative effects of installing wheel spacers to an 85 4runner? I want a very agressive look and wide stance, but also want to be faily strong. What is the biggest spacer that I could safely run?

It can be done, many do so, I run a variety of spacers on my '85. I have extra long, fully threaded studs and can go from 0" - 1" of spacer depending on my needs. Negatives are harder to steer, especially off-road/aired-down due to the increased scrub radius, increased wheel bearing loads and possibility of failure. Spacers up to 3/4" can usually be done w/ longer studs, or for wider, you have spacers (actually adapters) that have their own studs, so you havea total of 12 lug bolts. For about the same price as spacers, you can get wheels with less back spacing which do the same thing as spacers (i.e. push the tire out wider). I've never had problems with spacers and have run them in one width of another for about 8 years on- and off-road. My front axle is built 3" wider than stock, so I don't "need" to run spacers, but I choose to when I run my narrow wheels/tires for a more stable stance off-road. With my wider wheels/tires, I can pull the spacers to keep from being too wide.

I had to put 1/8" (or maybe 1/4 but they were thin) spacers on my front on the 85 because my new rims rubbed the steering arms. I wouldn't go thicker than that with slip on spacers. If you do an SAS and go with the big spacers - that's different, and they work fine. They bolt on, then have their own studs for the wheels.

the only problem i had was the spacers are alum and the hub is steel. the studs on the alum to steel would work lose. i had the right front tire come off going down the high way. if you use them just lock tight the spacer studs to the hub.
