wheel spacer?

If i am putting on a wheel with a backspacing of 3.75 compared to stock which is 4.25 or something like that., do i need wheel spacers? I read this in a thread and due to my lack of expertise with wheels , is this correct? :wtf:

No. A wheel with less backspacing moves the tire out, there will be MORE clearance than a stock wheel.

Any good or bad feelings on wheel spacers? Only heard the horror stories.
