What's up with my gas mileage?!?!?
My girlfriend and I drove down to Baton Rouge this past weekend for the LSU/Alabama game. I decided I was going to see how well my truck was doing as far as MPG. After damn near totally running out of gas in the middle of nowhere Mississippi (it's amazing how few gas stations there are on the interstates in this state) I realized that I only got 270 miles on that tank. Assuming a tank size of 16.2 gallons, that equates to a whopping 16.7 mpg on the highway. What in the world? I just did a little research online and the '01 2WD should get 20 mpg on the highway. A couple of things I have working against me are my roof rack (wind resistance) and the 265/75/16 Revos, but are they enough to cost me over 3 mpg? I just don't get it. The engine should be clean as a whistle after several Sea Foam treatments, plus I have done the deckplate mod with an Amsoil filter and done the ISR mod. Where did my mileage go and is there anything to do to improve it? BTW, I've got new plugs. They were changed just a few thousand miles ago. Thanks guys. Later.

One more tidbit that I forgot to add is that I have always run 93 octane super unleaded in my truck. In the three years I've owned it, it hasn't once had anything less than 93 in it. And on top of that, good 93 like Amoco, Shell, Chevron, etc.

well there is a guy on here saying if you floor it you get better gas mileage,
so maybe you werent floorin it, that is why you ran out of gas?
you drive a truck man so its no surprise.
i use to have a landcruiser '92 and on long trips it had horrible mpg. and plus you carry stuff or loaded.

#1. Go by what you the receipt said, not what you think went in.
#2. Fill up with 87. Assuming that your objective is to save money.
I get 22-23mpg with no over-inflated 32" tires, no seafoam, 87 gasoline and no other silly mods.

I've got a Dynomax Super Turbo exhaust on the truck. The stock tire size was 265/70/16. I just find it hard to believe that the small increase in tire size had that much effect on the mileage. I think it's mainly due to the drag created by the roof rack. Maybe next time I make the trip I'll take it off and see if I get any better mileage. BTW, average trip speed was around 80 mph.

i know all you folks dont get enough math every day, so here you go.
if you went up in tire size, you got more miles per gallon than your 'trip computer' thinks. remember circumferance = 2 pi r. so a 30" tire rolls about 188" in one revolution, and a 32" tire rolls 201". that's 6% further. that would account for a little more than 1 mpg in 20.
sorry if you already get enough math every day.

I have a 2wd just like you, I used to drive 80 on the interstate, which is natural to me(age 19), but lately I've made myself go 70 or 75 and the milage increase is pretty good, maybe 2-3mpg better.

If you had the windows down that would also decrease mpg. I think all the things you mentioned add up to 3mpg less. The roof rack alone I think is around 1 mpg. A fairing on the roof rack would help. I'm getting about 19 mpg with 285/75's.
