What's up with 2.4 clatter at warm idle???
I have a 2.4 in a '00 extended cab with 36K miles. It runs great and with a crankcase full of Royal Purple 5-30, is smooth and quiet......... except at warm/hot idle. The ˟˟˟˟˟˟ thing clatters like a diesel. Really! I can't tell if it's bearings, lifters, or whatever. It did so with dino oil and a cheap filter, too. I'm now running a Mobil 1 filter with the RP, just as I do in all my vehicles and my powerboat.
I bought the truck with 32K miles.
Anyone else experience this? What'd ya do? Is a trip to the dealer advisable?
TIA,
Randy

my 2.7 does it slightly when its hot, i think that it is just some valve noise, you have to strain to hear mine, so if yours is sounding like a diesel, you may want to pull the valve cover and check the valve clearance, the spec is on the emission sticker on your hood, just make sure that the lobe on the cam is up on each bucket your checking, good luck

So a valve adjustment has been suggested. Anyone else have any ideas?

i had my valves adjusted after they started making a similar noise which definitely solved the problem, and then soon after i started hearing a similar sound, but it wasn't the valves. all it was the the #1 spark plug that had loosened up and was rattling around. have a look at the plugs.
